fixing electric aerials??

so i'm fixing an electric aerial from a '99ish Vienta.

the plastic toothed cord that pushes the aerial up had snapped about halfway and twisted around, so it no longer pushed up, and is all crap and cracks easily.. and hence is now much shorter..

anyway, can you get that plastic toothed cord from somewhere? can make out of nylon trimmer line (3.5mm OD) and file teeth onto it (about 1-1.2m of it )?? need to just get another whole unit from wreckers? are they spendy? suggestions?

buy a new pole from toyota, you may e ably to get one after market but from memory the genuine ones are reasonably priced
you will need to remove the rest of the old cord from the motor assy

yup, old cord has been removed to allow "manual" operation already...

Yeah, you should be able to buy the parts. There was some place I was checking out a few weeks ago that had heaps of antenna bits. I'll see if I can find it and post the link here.

yes, as above just buy the ..mast ... i think they call it.
If you have the rest of the cord out of the aerial that broke, you won't need to pull it apart or remove it to fit the new one.

yes it is called the aerial mast and as everyone said make sure ALL the broken bits are removed out of the motor before installing the new one otherwise it'll never work properly. Getting a genuine one wo'nt be too expensive but the aftermarket ones are pretty cheap too so just depends on what you want to do

Couldnt you just buy an aftermarket aerial and hook it up to the factory electrics i'm sure they are fairly cheap from generic auto shops.

yes you can but it would be cheaper to buy just the mast and it's an easier job then having to rip out te whole aerial

you think an aftermarket electric aerial, plus bracketry required.. would be cheaper than $31.64 for a replacement mast?

assuming that effective communication was made to toyota today ... they don't seem to like people asking for part numbers... soft...

Just something for all the people out there that are going to replace there mast on there Toyota aerials, If the car has some age on it, it is probably a good idea to pull the aerial out of the car and undo the covers to access the inside, after removing the case to see the inside just have a look at the plastic gears and make sure none of them have small cracks towards the middle of the gears where they connect to the centre steel pin that locates the gear in the case.

If these gears are cracked the aerials tend not to work at all or don't work very well, these gears aren't generally available seperately and although they aren't as common as broken masts they are quite common at breaking, so if you buy a new mast and the gear is no good then you will have wasted your money.
