sure the timing isnt ment to be set at 10 degrees BTDC ?, from memory the 2 pins in the diagnostic port have to be crossed to alter timing
I have this problem reoccurring in my ST184 Celica, 5sfe series 2 motor.
The car pings at strange intervals, once the car is all warmed up it seems to ping around 1600-2500rpm to about 2but at say 5%to about 45% throttle, if you push more it goes away.
And there is no pinging at say after 3000rpm.
I was thinking it could be a faulty throttle position sensor but I have no error codes coming up on the dash.
Timing is set to normal - 10 degrees TDC
Also I have tried running optimax but it seemed to have made no difference to the issue.

I would try changing the fuel filter first. Then maybe try adjusting the throttle position sensor.
If you've tried the 10 million other things that I'm sure I put in an ozcelica post ages back, then I have one final addition (read that as 'wild stab in the dark') : Malfunctioning EGR system. The EGR valve is closed at WOT so that would explain why its ok when you plant it.
Just remove it & block off the hole in the manifold, you dont need that shit anyway lol.. But if you do insist on keeping it then just take it apart and see if theres any faulty bits, I have 2 or 3 spare EGR valves in the shop because I always remove them. If you want one its yours.
