Hey all,
i took the rear casing off the iron sandwich plate to fetch a rogue bolt that miraculously made it's way into my gearbox.
as soon as i pulled the rear casing i heard something drop to the bottom of the case.
it's a small ballbearing maybe 5mm diameter.
anyway, fished out the bolt but now can't find where the bearing actually comes from.
any ideas would be good as i currently have no clue.
it's the only part in the rear housing that i can't find a place for.
will post up pics and anyone who knows can feel free to point it out to me.

Have a look through the TSRM - click here (6.34MB pdf)
The exploded view suggests a few balls but im not sure how likely they are to fall out - look on p 49 & 50 for the exploded view. What I have listed below is the step and page associated with the disassembly where you find the removing of the balls (and in brackets is the page seen on the exploded view)
p51, step 4 - x1 rear extension housing (p49 - near speedo output)
p53, step 11 - x4 bottom of the stright screw plugs on the centre steel plate (p49)
p55, step 22 - x1 near speedo drive gear (p50)
p57, step 28 - x1 near counter 5th gear thrust washer (p50)
At least if you cant work out where it goes, the TSRM will at least tell you how to pull it apart/put it back together (hopefully in one piece)
Thanks a ton, i never would have tought to use this reference, i suspect it's the first susggestion you put forward i'll get stuck into it first thing tomorrow

Yes the selector forks at the side (and the shafts that go through them) all have those balls and various others in them, its how each gear is locked out from the others
When you dismantle these you have to be REALLY careful to get them all back in the correct positions
Ask me about putting the box back together, sealing it up then discovering one of those balls on the bench!
all in the sake of learning

Make sure you test all 5 gears and reverse before putting all the casing bolts back in.

Looks to me like a detent ball which fell out of the hole to the left of the bearing housing in the second picture
Jealousy is a curse
I second madmont's opinion ...
You should have a bolt on the outside of the casing, where the hole goes out to the side, take that bolt out & there will be a spring in there as well, pull out the spring assemble the box fully back together & then fit the ball down the threaded hole & then the spring & then the holding bolt ..
yeah i managed to get at it this morning, it was the 1st and second transmission assist bearing. just the plug on the extension housing with the torx bit.
