Default Identify c52 vs c56 gearbox

From what I can find out by searching, there is no external difference between a late c52 (2 starter hump) and c56 gearbox ?

I have pulled the c-series from my aw11 - it's a converted FWD box, and am trying to identify it. As the box is still bolted to the engine, counting turns to find out 3rd / 4th ratios is impractical. The box has a sheet-metal cover above the LHS driveshaft, if that's any use. I can post pictures if necessary, but if the boxes are externally identical, it won't help.

ps This forum software won't let me search for "c56" - it says the word is too short - so I had to rely on google. This is how to use Google search on toymods - add "site:toymods.org.au" (without the quotes) to your search query.

Apologies if this has been covered before - if it has, please post the link.

    Thanks

The early c56 looks exactly like the c52, the later c56 is slightly different where the selector shaft goes through the box. Where the selector shaft sticks out on the AW11 box it has a little bulge at the end, the later c56 does not have this bulge and makes it difficult to make an oil seal to fit for the selector shaft.

Impractical how? Pull the plugs and the engine should turn by hand reasonably easily

Yeah, I've read all that, and have a library of gearbox pics. The box I have is either a c52 or an early (s'top) c56, but I don't know which. As it will be up for sale soon, I would like to know , so I can describe / price it accordingly.

Yeah, but I was hoping someone would chime in and say there was some subtle difference in the casing. I have seen a reference to a different (alloy) end cap, but with no photo's of what they were talking about, that was no help.

I'll probably have to do as Hiro says...

    well i know that 8200rpm in 3rd gear on a C52 with 195/50R15 is 155km/h...

youtube 'mattysshop' ae92 0-155km/h will show this..

but note my tacho was stuffed.... i had a data logger and it read 8150-8180 rpm limiter in 3rd/4th on the dyno... so i know that limiter was infact the proper 20v limit... (irrelevent)

    might help i'm not sure..
