Hi,

The original engines coming out of Japan never ran 98, so why should they need to now?
I would like to know his reasons as to why they require it.

In the early 70s the Japanese started to introduce unleaded petrol. However, at that time they still were selling leaded petrol. The engines at that time were designed to run leaded as well as unleaded, so they had hardened valve seats (ie 2T, 18R engines). IIRC the old leaded super petrol was 98RON, and was the recommended petrol for the 18R-G and 2T-G engines. Hence the need to ensure they still get 98RON petrol, unleaded or otherwise. This is for the 18R-G (210 head) and the 18R-GR (230 head) engines.

In the mid 70s the engines were designed with a lower compression ratio so they could run lower octane fuel (as well as having anti-pollution set-ups), which were given the "U" suffix, and therefore were called the 2T-GU and 18R-GU. These engines could run 95RON. Similarly, the 2T-GUE and 18R-GUE could run 95 or 98RON.

My 18R-G doesn't like anything less than 98RON. The 18R-C in Ronnie works with 95 or 98RON. The old Corolla I had with the 4A-C could run 95 or 98RON. Neither the 18R-C or 4A-C liked 91RON.

Trini's 18R-GTE uses only 98RON.

In any event, I usually fill my cars with 98RON. The price difference is minimal and I am getting a better fuel. Hell, I even fill up the cans for the lawn mower with 98!

The only problem now is that your 91 is the ethanol mix which is'nt good for your engine ESPECIALLY your older engines it runs way too dry and is'nt good for your valves ....

i also use the 98 in my lawnmower that's probably why it's still working after 12 years haha

Hi,

I didn't know about the "too dry" bit about ethanol. I know that it can perish rubber fuel lines, but thought this would be only with higher ethanol percentages.

Ethanol blends are too dry for leaded fuel only vehicles. Also not good for small motors, 2 smokers, and marine engines.

I ran ethanol blended 91 RON in my 18R-C without issue.

You could just about run pig fat in an 18R-C, thanks to its pedastrian nature and sturdy build.

I've had EFI fuel filters disintigrate internally cause the ethanol eats the glue that holds it all together plus they say 10 percent ethanol more like 30-40 percent!!! From my experience and what i see everyday ethanol blend is the worst stuff to put your engine through it even sludges up your oil heaps qiucker.

Australian Octane ratings:
LP (leaded petrol) 89 RON
Super (leaded): 95-96 RON
LRP: 96 RON
ULP: 91-92 RON

So 95 RON premium should be fine.

I'd be very surprised if 10% ethanol was 40% ethanol... I can't imagine the petrol companies would want to spread their cheeks quite so easily for a big fuckoff dildo of a court case.
