Default MR2 3rd gen turbo question

I know i was mad keen on keeping it all motor and swapin the redtop beams in, but i will be entering the NSW hillclimb championship next year, as a round was held at grafton a little while ago and it was a big event, i didn't do too badly, took 3rd in class, the guys that took 1st and 2nd just so happen to be a father son combo that own a worked MR2 GT. yeah i was happy i got put in the same class as well . i was only 9 seconds behind thou While there i read through the cams regulations on classes, mine being "closed roof sports cars over 1.6L" and then mentioned that the level of modifications was essentially unlimited

So i'm going to veer from the redtop beams to a 3rd gen 3sgte, As when i bought the car, he chucked in an exhaust system a friend gave to him, whichs looks to be a 5Zigen 2.5" catless system and downpipe, i tried to fit it to the NA exhaust but it looks like the downpipe is needed for it to match properly. It was used in a track car, so i guess i'll see how good it is. Anyway I have been looking for a while for the gen 3 turbo motor and they are hard to find, however, i have found a place that has 2 for sale, in my price range (both are sub $4000), both are long blocks. the first is a stock motor with an uncut harness, the second has a TD06-20G turbo and BOV on it, though i'm not sure if its got an uncut harness or LSD.

I'm not too sure which way to go here, i was going to just get a stocker on the assumption that anyone with a worked 3sgte would be loathe to sell it, but now seeing one with this turbo on it has me between a rock and a hardplace. I dont know much about turbo's, and am doing some reading now, but is the aforementioned TD06-20G turbo a good match for the mr2 3sgte motor, or would i be better off staying with the CT-20. While the car is road reg at the moment, it might become a track only in the future (or i'll find a hartop shell and put the blown motor in that) so I dont mind if its a little (or moderately) unhappy down low, who drives a sports car at idle anyway?

TD-06 is found in Evos ya? that's a pretty good turbo if it is... anti-lag as well.. but i'd have to say the 3S engine would need some mods to handle that blower (after all it is capable of giving the Evo 400hp at stock)... probably thicker head gasket, good bottom-end job and ported head... and definitely need a good computer to run it..

go the TD-06 if u're serious about the races... unlimited mod FTW eh.. plus it's uphill so u definitely need a fair bit of power.. and a good turbo that won't lag as much..

Check out ATSracing.net if you want some more info on the TD-06. Awesome turbo, I am considering one for my car. I think it would be a little large for track racing on a 3SGTE, as it's spool is a bit later than the CT20b/CT26. But if you don't want to use it I'll buy it

I did some reading up on understanding compressor maps, by some fluke the article i found showed this exact turbocharger and was seeing how good a match it is for the 3sgte, awesome. Link to article Here

I played around with it and it seems like it the 2000rpm line enters the compressor map at 3-4psi, and could hit full boost 18psi by 4000rpm and carry through to redline and beyond. IF i'm reading it properly then i think it would be a very good match as i am above 4000rpm about 90% of the time. I gave the guys a ring to ask them about it, and found out that it had an airflow meter not a map sensor, so i'm heartbroken now, especially when he said he was asking $1000 less than the advertised price.

3rd gen stock or 2nd gen with turbo that's almost too big. the 2nd gen is in top condition, anyone for a 2nd gen 3sgte with a ct20 on it

just missed out a gen3 3sgte mr2 halfcut on importbits i think it was, had a tonne of mods with it for about $5000 i think. Cousin was about to plomp down the money to upgrade his aw11, but just missed it. -

Still with the 3sgte's you can't seem to get the perfect one, all the gens seem to have fatal weaknesses here and there, but research suggests you can mix and match most of the good bits from different gens such as the later gen3 blocks which don't appear to suffer from cracking the block between bores etc. Cousin is looking at using the 5s block and getting it back to square and using gen3 bits. I'm not sure how feasible that is.

i thought jostix had a gen 3 motor in his aw11 and i know he has had problems with cracking between the bores i would stick with the stock gen 3 3s and go from there

Yeah probably the easiest option, and in an aw11 stock gen3 power should be plenty.

Still would be good to get some solid info with what you can mix and match with S series motors and what is the best combination, which ones have particular weaknesses etc.

Heres the gen3 halfcut i was talking about:
http://www.importbitz.com.au/halfcuts.htm pretty sure it was about $5000 before it got sold.

i believe joshtix was saying the 5s block is stronger and that you could use 3sgte pistons but would need custom rods if you wanted to go stronger

very interesting!! Wonder why it's not bieng done (much).
Would you still need custom rods to make the engine square? 5s is stroked isn't it? or would having the 3s crank/rods/pistons make it square again? (actually that probably isn't a simple bolt in changeover come to think of it)

sorry i think its the 3sgte rods you can use but need custom pistons

it does have a longer stroke its a 2.2ltr ive driven one here in canada but it was a 5sfe with a t3/t4 it was pretty quick altho that was when we accidentally had it running 16psi long story but nevertheless had some good torque off boost
