    Default Rust remedy for dummies

I discovered a few weeks back the boot of the old SV21 Camry is flooding when it rains. I discovered rust up top where the water channel is.

I've never owned a car of this age before so am a bit clueless. How do you go about fixing rust on a car? I'm assuming I'll have to get it cut out, putty and paint it some thing like that?

The only way to get rid of rust and stop it coming back is the remove it. If its surface rust it can be sanded out if its more severe it is best to get it cut out and replaced with good metal. A lot depends on the location also, Sandblasting or soda blasting is very good for large panels and didcovering the extent of the rust, doors, hatch's boots and large panels.

Ranex works good for neautralising rust , but you have to chip away the big flakes of rust and give it a good going over with a wire brush first. You can buy it at most hardware stores that sell paint supplies.

if you want to stop it and dont care what it looks like, wire brush, cover in phospheric? (spelling!) acid, let it dry, then paint over it with tar/bitumen coating to seal it

On the Ranex bottle it says you can paint over it once it is dry. I think you only have to rinse the ranex off with water before it drys then after the water drys off it is right to paint over

    If its not bad.
    Bash out all loose rust.
Spray with a phospheric acid (so many differant brands, pick one)
build it back to shape with nu-tech cold galv. (pretty much a bog with metal fillings in it, very good). OR use hammerite if its not an aesthetic part.
    Paint over top.

    Or if its Servere
    Cut out.
    Weld new steel in.

    Guys,
Phosphoric acid works well on rust. I lay a rag on the rusted area and then pure a bit of acid on so it can soak for a while. Once the rust is gone, neutralise and then use an etch primer.

If its bad, cut out and weld in a new bit. Remember that for rust to form you need water and air, so make sure drain holes etc are clear and the problem won't come back. Thats why plain mild steel left in the weather only gets light rust as the water is never trapped for long periods.

    Cheers,
    Simon
