    Default 3rzfe turbo questions

    hey guys,

currently looking at turbo charging my 3rz in a 4wd hilux, there are a few questions i have for people with turbo hilux's allready. My plan is to run a garrett turbo, custom intake plenum, 650cc rx7 injectors, 3" exhaust, front mount and aftermarket ecu, My plan is to have a reliable motor that wont be a daily driver but will get used on the weekends and will get alot of right foot in some situations realistically somewhere around 350hp would be plenty.

Firstly does anyone have any first hand experience with lc engineering products mainly there piston/rod setups and has anyone thought of changing the cam shaft to allow the motor to rev out more i have noticed lc engineering do a cam that goes to 7000rpm.

Second is iv been told a good size turbo would be a garrett gt3076 with .82 rear housing im guessing this size would spool up quickly and be more suited to the factory cams and redline, what im looking for is mostly more driveability on the road even with 4.88's it isnt the fastest car with 33 or 35 inch tyres for example on the highway i usually stay in 4th and thats at about 2800 rpm i find 5th is pretty much useless espicially on hills but in saying that it doesnt struggle to hold 105/110kmh all day long. Im not to worried about fuel consumption and i can sarifice a bit of low down torque as in low range with the gearing i have there is plenty there, my main goal is in 4wd comps to be able to keep up with the v8's and also to have plenty of fun on the street.

Lastly im lost with the whole ecu thing there are so many options and every shop you go to tells you a different story and just wants to sell there product, im thinking of either a microtech lt10 or haltech sport 1000 im aware that the haltech is dearer and possibly to much for 3rz but id like to keep aircon and have the extra outputs.

    sorry about the long post.

    cheers

    matt

up in mackay, only reason i was thinking about rebuilding the motor is because power levels may change and it will cop a fair bit of abuse when 4wding.

ok pitty your not in the brisbane/gold coast area as there are a few done down this way, i have seen over 500rwhp from standard engines but theres only so far you can push reliability, so if you have future plans to go further than 350-400hp might pay to just do engine now. do a search in the readers rides and your bound to find a few turbo 3rz's

yeah have had a look biggest question is whats going to be a suitable size turbo, berad has suggested a garrett gt3076 with the .82 rear housing just after more suggestions or expeirences with the 3076.

    cheers

turbo size sounds about right, but 350hp ??? on std pistons and rods, a second hand 3RZ is now $1700 but a set of rods and pistons is a lot less than that, Did berad tell you his one ended up in a bucket, and i have seen 3 others binned because the rods letting go, some seem to be ok but its not worth the trouble, 9.5/1 comp, 15 psi 350rw ( more than a 6L chev) just doesn,t add up, not reliably anyway, check out Atomic speedware go to combos, about $1100US + a ml gasket and a bore job, i can do cams if your interested but your asking for trouble if your gonna rev it to 7000,

cheers for the reply rodi, im well aware that the standard bottom end probably wont last thats why the plan was to run the lc engeineering piston/rod set also with the gt3076 what hp do you think it would make on 16psi or so?

all the big hp ones have giant turbos and giant lag to suit, i happen to live almost next door to the 530hp hilux and its not a very fast car, just good for dynos, i think that turbos a bit small for a 3 rz but work on 300 and if you get more well done

does anyone have any suggestions for turbo size, after talking to berad on the weekend im considering looking at the gt28 series possible a 2876, chasing something that will be making boost at 1500rpm through to 5000.

    cheers

if your looking at making boost at those sort of revs forget about making 350rwhp aim more torwards 250-300 as those turbos are to small for a 2.7litre will choke its top end power. i would not use any turbo with a t2 flange on a 3rz, id say minimum of gt3071 with the optional t3 housing.
if you want power at 1500rpm just use something like a standard rb25det turbo
