Default Do some toyotas NEED 12v to start

I am having an odd issue with my 1JZ Cressida as it won't always start, it seems that when my battery is showing less than 12v it will not crank, but when I hook up another car to it (it then shows 13.8ish) it will instantly crank.

If it won't start for me and I hook up the other car then wihout fail it'll start.

Might the ecu be not allowing the starter to wind over since it has low voltage?

ECU has nothing to do with the starter circuit mate.

Sounds like the solenoid isn't getting the current to pull it in, or the solenoid is dodge.

yeh id start with a battery load test and a volt drop test in the starter circuit.. there you will find your problems...

it's a fairly common issue in the cressy's. If you add a starter relay in the engine bay that is triggered by the original starter trigger wire, which provides a direct starter solenoid feed from the battery it will start every time. Make sure the new solenoid feed from the battery is fused.

I haven't investigated it that much, but I believe the ignition switch on the end of the barrel gets worn or has carbon build up and limits the current to the starter solenoid, just like 20yo cressida power window switches

FYI - on cranking voltage will drop to below 12v anyways. Like OC said the issue is more likely to be a lack of current, whether from a worn/faulty component or just an old/stuffed battery.

check battery condition first, then battery earth, and the large +ve leads.

I've generally solved similar issues with big fuckoff earth straps or large cca batteries.

completly agree with JP as this problem hampered me for months , spoke to auto elec and his opinion is that the corrosion in the THIN toyota wiring gets to much and will not allow enough amperage to get to solenoid.

pull apart the switch on the back of the ignition switch and the gunk and pitting on the STA pins will explain why you don't get 12V to the starter solenoid. Fit relay as noted above and all will be good.

not sure if its an issue with 1j's, but my 7m cressy still always starts with low voltage.... if its fully dead a roll start is no prob either

i do know that rodeo's wont start if there is not enough voltage tho.... computer says no!

If you want to test if its the wiring from the key then just run a wire direct to the starter solenoid next time it does it. If touching it to the positive terminal kicks the starter over then a relay wil fix the problem. If it doesn't look elsewhere.
