    Default MX83 Shuddering under braking

    Hey Guys,

I did a Nissan/ford brake conversion on my car ages ago, and since then have had some awful shuddering under braking.

General braking is OK, with minimal shuddering, hard braking or braking while going down hill, you need to hold onto the steering wheel for dear life.

Ive never had any problems with it stopping, just seems to be really bad.
I "may" have had some shuddering on my old brakes, but it was that long ago, I dont remember, and it was nowhere near this bad.

I am running R33 GTST calipers, with Slotted RDA BA Rotors and billet alu locating rings.

I havent tried changing the pads yet, as then I have to buy some, and also havent tried getting non slotted rotors to try. (Probably be cheaper then new pads!)

Im after any other ideas of what it could be.

    Thanks,

    Herus

I've got the same upgrade, but with DBA rotors - the reason I went with DBA over RDA was hearing stories similar to yours, where the RDA rotors would warp much more quickly. The factory ford rotors are notorious for annoying warpage, even through normal use, and I'd heard the RDA's weren't a lot better.

I've probably done 30-40,000 k's on mine, and they still feel ok, apart from a little bit of vibration from the slots if you've been braking a lot - they seem to get a material build up on the edge. A hard application of brakes seems to clear it up though

Having said that though, I could be completely wrong, and your rotors might be fine

edit: what kind of pads are you running?

I wouldnt have done 10000klms on mine since it was in there. and its been like that since.

I suppose I could have had crap rotors from the start, but i wouldnt think so?

Would getting them machined help at all?

By shuddering, do you mean shuddering, or steering vibration?

I've got minor vibration in mine as well, unsure what brand rotors. Figured they have slight warpage, is there any easy way to check this yourself at home?

    Its both.

The car shudders, and the steering vibrates like crazy.
I understand slotted rotors will cause slight shuddering, but it shouldnt be like this.

Sounds more like the discs aren`t centred, - check to make sure the discs are spinning true. You can do this by jacking it up, taking the wheels off, and with the steering fully locked in one direction, spin each disc to see if they are spinning off centre. you should be able to see if they are warped this way too...

    good luck

I was going to say the same as Maverick.

might be worth taking everything off again, hitting the hubs with a stiff wire brush to get the hub face as clean as possible, coating it in copper grease then reassemble it all. Measure the runnout on the discs after that to make sure they are spinning true and work out weather you need to machine them or get somr new ones from there.

ahhhh good idea, I hadn't thought of that

now that you mention that, I had to get my spacer rings machined slightly - got them to put an angled edge on the inside lip, as the hub wasn't a perfect right angle between the disc mating face, and the 'crown' of the 'hat' part, that you can see through the rim if you pop the centre cap off.

up until that point, the wheel wasn't actually clamping the rotor down, it was clamping the locator ring. The rotor could "wobble" between the wheel and the hub. It was bad enough to notice while assembling, while the car was still off the ground.

also Maverick, are you still interested in some JZA80 rims?
