Default Current model Hilux diff observation.

Was looking over the new batch of Hiluxes at work(minesite) and noticed that these now have B series 220mm diff on the rear end, both the 4x2 and 4x4's. The last model Hilux had the standard A series diff. A nice slick R151F behind the donks too.
These new diffs also run a tall 3.5 and 3.7 ratio too. The 4x2's have an open diff (BxxA code)and 4x4's(BxxB code) have a LSD though I don't know if these are clutch type or Torsen type(is there a mechanical way to tell externally?). It's strange Toyota don't have a LSD in the 4x2 turbo diesels because they certainly need it. We have to replace the tyres immediately with chunky rubber because traction is a big problem with these new-gen diesels.

The rear housing I guess would be a great upgrade for an old live axle car with huge power, the 4x2's have a 5 Stud Ford pattern. I see a lot people on hear talk about a Hilux rear diff upgrade, this goes once step further I guess. The new Hiluxes are everywhere now so we should be starting to see some stock at the wreckers soon. Wouldn't be cheap though.

I found that the hilux's make no mention of lsd's in any of their brochures and marketing material that they gave me when i worked for them this year, but it says on the diff its self to use lsd oil only. on rear only

The latest Hilux rear axles would be too wide to be an easy upgrade for an old live axle Toyota with big power, cutting down axle housings and chopping axles and resplining them becomes an expensive exercise when it is done correctly.

i have an 8.2" toyota rear diff which mentioned as diff from hilux. at first i was told it is an LSD and when i observed it, the diff was sealed off, not like a conventional open diff.. but when i put everything in, it appears to be an open diff (left axle and right axle are not locked) when i turn one side of the wheels.. how to identify which rear diff that i have externally?

The gears should be visible if it's an open centre. Sounds like you have a torsen LSD, which behaves like an open diff when it's not loaded up.

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but can anyone confirm the new model Hilux diffs are NOT compatible with the old housing and axles?
