    Default 4agze alternator reco ?

hey guys, i'm pretty new to the toyota scene and have recently purchased an ae82 with a GZE fitted, i have recently carried out some work to getting the car running up to cratch and in the meantime the alternator has shat itself, and is no longer charging.
I have had no luck finding a second hand one, and a sparky told me it could not be reco'd !? i find this hard to believe.. My other option is buy one new from toyota japan - this will be $870 and a 3 week wait, as you can imagine, i don't want to do this.

Could anyone point me in a direction ? I'm sure that people have had them rebuilt, and if so where ? any info would be much appreciated - thanks

    Alex

if all it needs is new brushes (or brushpack) and smoothing of the rings.. (and assuming it is compact denso alt)
brushes are like $10 and easy to change. bearings, less easy to change but mechanically competent people can do it..

if the slip rings are fubared, often better to get another one with less fubared rings

sometimes it's a bit more then that something could have gone wrong with another component inside the alteranotr (rectifier pack, rotor, etc) and it would be cheaper to buy a whole new unit then to repair it have you tried aftermarket alternators they shouldnt be any more than $200-$300

thats true, but far less common and harder to check.
if brushes are worn dorn, it is probably them.. or at least worth checking

I agree with oldcorollas, ND brush boxes for int reg alts are all the same, easy to change and cheap, but if the slip ring is worn a lot, they are a pain in the ass to change.......not to hard just time consuming. Its rare for other parts to fail in these alts .
    cheers

I do alternators all the time for a living,

and had a go at buy s/h dead GZE alternators and fixing them and re-selling like I do with a few normal 4AGE alternators.

However I gave up as more often than not the GZE alternators short or burn out the windings inside the rotor. This is a problem that is not repairable. Slip rings wont fix it.
And the GZE rotor is one of it's own.
It has an extra long shaft out the front and it not interchangable with any other Nippon Denso rotor, and we have a list of about 70 differnt rotors available to us.

The actual alternator itself is different in the mounts to all the other toyota alternators too.

So is fact I would believe the fact it cant be repaired and the price for a new one.

Just have to keep trying for a good s/h one.

or.... do like i have and replace it with a universal bosch one. i chose a 120 amp for the stereo stuff.
mounts to the lower braket with a couple 'spacer' washers and i made a short extender bar for the top mount. i wired a 8 guage from the alt output (charge wire) directly to the battery and one from the wiring harness to kill the idiot lights when chargeing ( i will have to take a look see as to which colour wire i used, memory aint that great). i still havnt wired in a trigger, a rev past ~2500 rpm brings it online. though once one the feral i used the starter motor trigger as a trigger for the alt and it worked fine.
