Default 85 mr2 engine from the uk

i have some experience with body work and 350s in 40 and 50s pu's but not with computer run autos. i'm also almost as old as a rock and just as dense. with that said i, bought a morris van with an 85 mr2 engine and running gear from the uk. wasn't running as it should and saw that some wiring had been changed over there. caught fire and shorted the ecu and the ignition modual. can i convert the uk model to a us model ecu and igniter. thanks to any one.

i know with the st162 celica's the computers where just plug in and go between the jap model and the aus models.

just they might be tuned slightly differnt due to the fact that differn't countries different pollution laws etc

might need someone to to back me up on that though

thanks havabeer, went to the local toy dealer and they said they couldn't match the #s, called a toy dealer in the uk, could get an after market from denso, japan, $400+shiping just for an igniter. back to the u.s toy dealer, he couldn't order from the denso co. i have a line on an igniter in the uk used parts yesterday, good price so i might just be able to put this thing together, it's been 6 mo since i was able to drive the moggy, miss it, any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks

The US models will probably have extra wiring for EGR (will happily run without it tho may get an error about a missing EGR temp sensor) and an O2 sensor after the CAT (for california-delivered engines only, may get an error for missing sensor)

Ignitor should be the same regardless of country and you should be able to pinch an ignitor from any 3SGE/3SGTE (and possibly 5SFE) engined toyota of the same era.

edit: i got the motor wrong - you'll have to consult some 4age nerds.

being that its from a 1985 model mr2 , wouldnt it have a bigport 4age in it , if it is Im pretty sure the uk spec ones may have had airflow meters which was the same as most of the 4age out of the gts corollas in the US.

julz01, thats what most everyone thought when i posed the problem to those in the u.s this model has a 4 wire igniter on a map system. when i got the car the previous owner disconnected the diognostic wire which puts the signal to the speedometer read outs, don't know why, some other wiring had been worked on. don't want to go to a carborater. thanks

The minimum that would be required to successfully convert it to the US standards would be to install an AFM, an AFM type ecu, and the appropriate ecu to engine wiring harness. Not sure if any other wiring mods would be needed. The egr would not have to be connected, as it would not create any ecu faults. I would think most of the other parts would be pretty much the same, but not absolutely positive, although part numbers may vary.

The easiest way though would be to replace the shorted out parts with used British parts, plus you won't have the hassle of the egr and afm restriction. Just go onto Ebay.uk and look around. I shop on there all the time, and there are all kinds of 4age parts for sale.
So long and thanks for all the fish!

howdy.... I too am nearly as old as rocks... and just about as dense........

there are quite a few forums in the USA... club 4ag, ectoyotas, mr2oc.

The engine does not matter!!!! ALL TVIS(early series) engines equipped with cats have the same internal parts. Just because it began life as a Uk engine doesn't mean squat.

Here is what I'd do if I were you...... look for a 1st gen MR2(1985-1989) on craigslist... buy it... and that will give you everything you need to get yours running correctly. Keep the engine as a spare... and sell off everything else to get what you can back from the purchase
Information is POWER... learn the facts!!
