    Default Wheel bearing help

Ok i gotta change all 4 wheel bearings on my MR2. Just a couple of questions before i get into it. How should i tackle the bearings? Should i remove them and get them pressed somewhere or should i just take the hub someplace and get them to remove the old one and press in the new one?

Finally does anyone know any good places i can go in melb to get the bearings pressed/pulled?

    Thanks!

yes they need to be pressed. what sort of mr2 ?

ive never seen a front bearing in them need replacing, rears yes common maintinence issue but fronts are rock solid.

if you havent got a press you will need to get someone to do the job or take them hubs off yourself and then get them to do the bearings.

im planning to get the hubs off myself and get someone to press them in. Is it ok to remove them myself? Its an SW20. Yeah, im not completely sure why theyre all stuffed, car was sitting around for over a year tho, but still, tyres would develop flat spots before the bearings wouldnt they?

Either way, i can get them relatively cheap so ill do all 4. One place i called wants 50 per front and maybe less per rear, just pressing. I think thats way too much dont you?

The bearings won't flat spot. Is there play in them?

$50 a corner is pretty fair there is about half hours work in each one if they are already out on the bench ready to go.

ok i see, well i just jacked up each wheel and moved them around etc. Laterally/rocking vertically, only the rear drivers side wheel has about 2mm play, the rest are fine. Does this mean that one is stuffed? If i drive it what would i feel/hear to tell me if its stuffed or if there are other issues?

i just drove the car for a couple of minutes, i cant really hear any strange sounds or anything except (i think) the rubbing of a tyre on the bottom of the strut tower cause the tyre has developed a flat stop from sitting around (i checked this when i jacked up the car too).

maybe that loose wheels just needs the nut retightened (but not too tight)...

which nut? the main nut? or the wheel nuts? I checked al lthe wheel nuts, and when it moves, the disc moves with the wheel. But ill pop off the caps and check the main nut too.

    All of the nut/s!
The bearings will fail with or without noise and/or vibration, the drivers side seems to go more frequently from the different loads. 2mm isn't much & it might last another 50,000 and not get much looser. Any notchy & feel rough when being turned, it's more of a sign of a bad bearing that isn't going to last too long and needs to be replaced soon, before it siezes up on the axle and/or hub.

i have no idea what the going rate is but i wouldnt be surprised if you could buy a second hand bearing press off ebay for less than that... not the sort of thing you'd use a lot though.

and good luck getting it home in a MR2

if the bearings have to be manually greased prior to installation you could do that yourself and take them in zip lock bags. I cant imagine this part would be the highlight of a bearing pressers day so you might save a few $ and you know they have been packed well not in a hurry to get the job done
