Default 2JZ/1JZ A340 to R154/W58 Manual Gearbox Adapters

ive been thinking about how universal the manual gearbox adapters that we've deisgned for the UZ engines are... i mean Its obvioulsy not a far throw to get the UZ A340 Gearbox adapters to work on the JZ engines (actually ANY engine using an a340) using their A340 bellhousings, just the depth and subsequent adapter thickness varies.

i had a look at a 2jz block yesterday, and it looks like the crank face is about 8-8.5mm recessed behind the bellhousing mounting face (compared to the UZ crank face sitting positive about 5mm)

on top of that there are at least 2 different JZ-A340 bellhousings from what i can see, one slightly longer than the other. i assume the longer one is to suit the 2JZ with a bigger torque converter? either way, the one i measured was the longer one: a 'J3' bell and it was about 138-138.5mm deep (compared to UZ A340 bellhousing at 154mm). anyone know what the other one is ?

so, er, maths... difference in crank position is 13-13.5mm and difference in bellhousing depth is around 15.5-16mm...

so by my reckoning, theres about a 2.5mm difference between the assemblies, meaning any adapters made for use with the JZ engines (using a 138mm J3 bellhousing) should simply be made 2.5mm thicker than the ones ive got for the UZ? sound right to everyone else

actually, given the way the input shaft sits in the spigot bearings using the UZ adapters at present, you could probably get away with a 12mm w58 adapter, and maybe a 35mm r154 adapter. anyone know off the top of their head what stock alloy plate thickness are in the 35mm region? (w58 one best use steel)

    hmmm

now this info is also good for the t56 adapters too

i guess question outstanding at this point is "what are the other JZ bellhousings, what do they come from, and what are their depths?"

actually, anyone got similar info for other engines running a a340 where this adapter design could be used, just tweaked to the required thickness?

    cheers

Wouldn't one buy the OEM xJZ to R154 or W58 bellhousing?...

Maybe useful for 1G wanting to go R154 (someone wanted to do that ages ago if I recall)
, perhaps 1GZ also... I'm sure there are a few more I can't think of off the top of my head.

Also the cost of using a hydraulic throw out bearing might also put some off?...

yup... all fair points just trying to get all the numbers together so if someone does want one for whatever reason, i have a semi credible answer people do ask, from time to time, the weirdest things regarding these adapters. figured i might as well go do some measuring

plus i plan to release a t56 adapter design and im sure that will want to go across platforms too

so yeah... anyone know *actual* measurements/differences between the 1jz (short) and 2jz (long) auto a340 bellhousings?

    cheers

I have a 1G A340 bellhousing that you can use for measurements if you wish. I know it might be quite rare for someone to need anything beyond a W58, but I have also noticed people asking for them so they must have reason to.

    Coming to dyno day?

Being such a master at adapters.. How do you go about ensuring the input shaft is central to the crank?
I ask as I would like to make a 1mz to W58 adapter..

measuring and remeasuring. then gave the files to some guy with some fancy machine who indexed it all digitally and confirmed centrelines and sent me a printed report.

on top of that, about 5% of people who have bought the adapter designs seem to be machine-shop type folks, and feedback regarding centreline accuracy from their own measurements has reconfirmed mine several times. so im happy

that said, im not doing a new one anytime soon PITA... just making the most out of the designs that i aleady have

    cheers

What's the currently done thing as far as fitting a W5x to a JZ engine? I've heard only bad things about aftermarket bellhousings so if anyone knows where/how much I can a Toyota setup that would be great - either if anyone knows of one FS somewhere, or knows the Toyota OE pricing off the top of their head.

    Option 1 - genuine bellhousing - around $450ish
Option 2 - auto bellhousing and v-eight.com adaptor - anywhere from $100-$300 depending on where you get it made
