Check the cam timing, can easily be a tooth out and would only result in it running poorly at high rpm's and WOT.
Also i highly recommend using Genuine upper engine cleaner Part no. SA459,
if it hasnt been used on the vechile in a long time, it may need two cans put through it.

Only takes 30 mins to get the fans and covers off to check the timing so its probably worth check it.

    Cheers

The car is back to performing nicely with a clean MAF. It started playing up again in the last couple of days, but a few cleans with the contact cleaner seems to have sorted. If it keeps coming back, I'll probably just replace the MAF element again.

Yeah, getting hold of some of the upper engine cleaner or some Seafoam is on the agenda. Will be getting some and putting it aside for a couple of thousand km's from now when I do the oil and filter, and I'll do it, then change the plugs and clean the MAF again while I'm at it.

On a side note, it returned just over 9L/100km when I finally filled up, so given how I've been driving it, the O2 sensor must be working fine

that subi upper cylinder stuff is truley awsome... do it as per the directions... caution though... try not to inhale it lol... thermo fans kicked in and started blowing it in my face as i was spraying through the TB on the rolla... ohh you'll know when that happens...

shouldn't have a problem on MAF cars.. as your not able to run the engine and spray directly into the TB...

Indeed, I was a little worried given my 4-wire retro-fit into 3-wire loom

Being the owner of a WRX i know the issues your experiencing well.

    Firstly.
You said your running a 3"cat back exhaust. What ECU are you running??
Have you had it tuned to suit??
If not then i would highly recommend it.

    Secondly.
Your issue does sound ike an MAF problem. There are a number of ways to fix this.
Contact cleaner is a band aid solution and wont really fix it. The only way is to replace the MAF with a Genuine Subaru item or modify the wiring loom and run a Z32 Nissan MAF.
This can only be done if your running some sort of piggyback ecu that allows for it.ie Power FC, Unichip.

Alternatively you could just buy my WRX which runs an Autronic and be done with all your woes
But you might also want 1 thats not quite as quick as mine
Last tune it had it was just over 280KWS at all 4wheels. New tune and improvements should hopefully see a bit more

It's running factory ECU. Not planning to get the best out of it exhaust wise, it just came with the car. If it were me, I probably would've done the dump and cat before I did the rest of it, but hey

Yeah, problem is definitely a MAF issue, when it comes back and I'm out of contact cleaner, then I'll get a new MAF.

Thanks for the offer on the car, but if we buy another car like it, it'll probably be an Evo
