Default EFI fuel tank options for RA23

What have people done for EFI fuel tanks in '22's and 23's?

I don't have the standard tank anymore and would like to avoid the need for a surge tank, can I just buy some off the shelf aluminium tank that fits the area and bolt it in?

    hi strad
you can still use the stock fuel tank as it sits up high under the parcel shelf
a surge tank is not a big issue
we bought a great one off ebay for the club car , pretty cheap and well made
it even has a built in bracket for, a pump we used a stock vn 5 ltr one

I've used the standard 22 tank with a pump mounted under the car and no surge tank. Haven't had any problems so a replacement tank should be fine too.

I've also used the standard tank in my RA23 with no surge tank, haven't experienced fuel surge yet although I haven't tried racing it yet.

To answer the original question, if you don't want to use the original tank how about a fuel cell? A bloke on PF is currently fitting one to his Bluebird, it might give you some inspiration:

Thanks guys. I've decided that what I want to do is run the standard tank with a surge tank an two Bosch pumps. Should be good.

Fair enough. My RA23 has been modded with an MX62 pick-up, a well welding into to the bottom of the tank around the pick-up, and a high pressure fuel pump mounted down low alongside the spare wheel well. No surge tank, no surge issues, plenty of motorkhana's done with never a problem.

Just out of interest where did you mount the surge tank?

    hi craig
we mounted it just behind the left rear wheel
there was enough room even beside the exhaust

    hi strad
just be a bit wary of fuel vapour in the boot
to register it it, will have to be sealed

A little bit off topic, but why is there such a fuss about having a surge tank?

I can understand in cars that were carbied & the original tank is under the floor, but in this case where the tank is up high & there is the ability to mount the EFI pump down low, then a surge tank shouldn't really be necessary.

The pipe size from the tank may not be large enough in the case of an 11s car though

steve: they are fairly important when the tank is fairly low on fuel. Either as an external tank or a baffled section around the pickup.

take a non-surged tank car around a largish round-a-bout at speed. If the tank is under 1/4, you'll get a big miss/stall just when you want to exit the merry-go-round (or in my case, it was to WoT it to get ahead of a bus).

steve, if you go around a corner at 1G lateral acceleration, then the fuel will go to a 45deg angle in the tank... when initially turning, the angle may be higher due to the inertia of the fuel..

depending on where the pickup is, it can become uncovered... and EFI pump sucking air = suddenly no fuel pressure = not ideal

at least for a carby car, you have a few/10's of seconds of fuel in the fuel bowl until pump icks up fuel again, but EFI is critically important to have a constant supply of pressure fuel, with no air pickup..

    just like oil supply...
