    Default ST162 engine removal

Hello, the engine in my girlfriends 162 celica needs replacing. I have bought another wreck for the engine and about to do the transplant.
My question is would it be easier to just remove the engine and gb or unbolt the box from the engine and remove just the engine? My friend thinks it would be easier to remove the lot, I disagree however as the trans bolt don't look that hard to get to. Just looking to get some feedback on people who have done this before.

    Thanks.

for the sake of attacing the box and what not i agree its easyer to remove the lot, removed the 5sfe outa of my ST184 in just over 5 hours from a running state, stripped and replaced what was needed on both motors and fitted the new motor in and had running again the next day, where when i removed just the motor, it was a nightmare tryingto move it into place, while lining up the gearbox spline, and then having to attach the mounts and then bolt it in

okay thanks will do that then.. Yep i wasn't sure how hard it would be to jiggle the thing back onto the gearbox.

only added cost value is that you have to refill the gearbox oil....but no doubt it's more than likely due for it anyway. but saves alot of hassle and busted knuckles removing the lot.

warrior on these forums i think has the record for 162 engine removal with 2 hours

yeah take it all out at once. i think you have to do 3/4 of an engine removal to get the gear box out any way
As they say in the book, assembly is the reverse of dismantling, but slower cos you forgot where all the bits are

All at once - ive pulled out/refit a few doing it both ways both on the ground and on a hoist. If you have access to an engine crane lower the engine/box onto the ground/tyres and then use the crane to lift the car over the top by the radiator support.

    Another vote for both here
I lifted them both out of the vehicle though. It was an ST184 but I suppose it would be similar. It was kind of tricky to pull out intact as the transaxle kept fouling on the body. Had to tilt it quite severely by hanging the chain off center. It worked in the end but was a little bit annoying until I got that bit sussed out (Plus the engine was already supported only by the crane when I realized it needed tilting, so it was precarious to support it again to readjust the chain).
    Good fun though

You can remove the gearbox easily enough from the engine, but the other way is pretty difficult.

I'd also not recommend lifting by the rad support. Just get a chain & bolt it across the bay between the engine mounts after you've dropped the motor. much more secure.
