with my extremely limited knowlege id say it would be the gearbox oil
Hey guys, these recent days, when the car is cold, the car will not go it gear, especially reverse. It will engage any others, but with force. The car came with some Twin plate clutch, could this be on the way out? Or you think its in need of some oil?
with my extremely limited knowlege id say it would be the gearbox oil

Provided the gearbox is sound it will either be a "dragging" clutch (i.e. not completely disengaging) or incorrect grade gearbox oil/incorrect volume of gearbox oil.

when you try and push it into gear, doe sit feel like the layshaft is still moving (ie feel grinding/stuff thru gearstick?)Originally Posted by Koffee-Black
if you put clutch in, wait about 10 seconds, the layshaft should have stopped (unless clutch is allowing layshaft movement), and then when you try to engage gear, it may not go in, because bits may not line up.
if you try to put in gear too soon after engaging clutch, the layshaft is still spinning.. ok for forward gears, but should crunch a little in reverse..
somewhere in between, there is a good balance for reverse....
try with 5 or 10 seconds after engaging clutch, and then decrease time and see if it makes a difference.

Also try the simple things like bleeding the clutch and pressing the clutch fork with a long pole before you go ripping the box out.
Hopefully it's something simple.

hopefully it is, them V160 arnt cheap!
Old corollas, no, you can not feel the layshaft spinning, its like its at the top of the gear already. But once its warm, its ok, must be grade of oil Im thinking.

For an R154 yes, but definately not for a V160 - quite the opposite!Originally Posted by EldarO

Stick to the recommended specific Toyota V160/V161 fluid, repackaged Castrol Transmax Z and avoid a stuffed DU bush in the gearbox !

thanks guys. Yep, Redline is crap, I used this in my IS200, which had the W58, and there were metal particals in it when I drained it out !!
redline is GREAT stuff
just don't use it in the v160 box, or you run the risk of busting your seals = no gbox fluid, = $3000 rebuild
I had a similar problem many moons ago with a T50 box. It ended up being a dodgy pilot bearing that was 'on the way out' and kept the gearbox input shaft turning (albeit at a slower rate) even when the clutch was engaged.
Just a thought fwiw.

Metal particles in the gearbox oil is 100% normal.Originally Posted by Koffee-Black
