    Default factory 18rgeu under boost

Hello mates, i was hoping to get some information about how well the factory 18rgeu EFI system responds under boost from say a sc14, or even a turbo. I have recently been offered this system and was hoping that it would aid me in getting boost onto my car.

    Any help would be great!

    Cheers!

The factory EFI system is extremely simple, which is both good and bad. It's good in that it's easy to mess with it, and bad in that it's not very smart. In fact you could think of it as an electronic carbie - it sees X air and applies Y fuel, that's it.

Your biggest problem will be ignition control though. The 18R-GEU has a mechanical distributor, so getting any form of boost retard won't be easy. You could do the dodgy thing and wind the base timing way back, but obviously this isn't the best way of going about it.

Proper engine management is your friend when it comes to forced induction.

Hmmm, interesting one. There is always good managment of course, but I love these cheapo boost-on-a-budget setups. Is there an ignition advance/retard on a vacuum line or anything? Or a mechanical advance? You could mess with that to get what you need...Tune the computer with a Jaycar sender-bender and see how it goes Can't hurt, as long as you keep an eye on the AF ratios...

    Hi Ryan,

Like Norbie says, the ECU will handle light boost easy, but the spark is a bit harder to manage. How rare are 3TGTE's over there? The ECU from these is pretty similar, but it also has a boost enrichment system, which allows you to run a bit more boost, as well as giving you a 'margin of error'. The 3TGTE dizzy retards on boost, but there would be mods required to adapt the internals to the 18RGEU casing, so it would probably become a big headach.

You could probably figure out boost retard on the 18RG dizzy with a bleed valve referenced to boost pressure, but of course, that's gonna be a lot of screwing around.

For best results, an aftermarket computer will always win.

PS, thanks for the grille, it's in awesome condition

If you are looking for a cost effective no frills ECU please check out the megasquirt. It has all the features you need plus many more, for someone on a budget. megasquirt-II out of the box will do everything you want, just replace the internals of your 18rg dizzy with 22r VR sensor (bolts in). Use all the stock sensors, injectors, ignitor, etc. Bonus is you can throw away the air flow meter. very cheap setup. There must be hundreds if not thousands of megasquirts installed and running in the US.

if your not keen soldering you can buy it prebuilt for US$410 from www.diyautotune.com
or solder it together yourself for US$250

In the end it will work out more cheaper and easier than any cobled together system using the original ECU. Plus you get a heap of extra features.

    cheers

assuming u r asking how the mechanical side will hold up; then yes, they hold up well, so long as u do the above and dont wind in too much boost

How much is too much then? I was under the assumption that if I can adjust the AFM, then I can run into 10 psi. Is this not the case?

    probably not much more than 10 into a stock motor, can go more but will need high quality efi gear {big injectors, microtech/haltech etc tec}

over 20 is acheiveable with non forged innards tho

Please expound on Megasquirt. I have looked into it in the past, but have become scared of the tables I have to create. Is there a place that can give me a baselineto start with? Are there members here that would be willing to offer their tables/softwear to help me get it going and eventually running well?

I was refering to the capabilities of the EFI to control it. I know that my motor, with 7.5:1 forged pistons will take 20+psi, but I want to make sure that I can control it.
