Default Will it fit - Cleveland -> YN55 Hilux

    G'day all.

Quick, simple question. As stated in the title.

Will a Ford Cleveland V8 fit into a YN55 Hilux (Early 80s, Single cab RWD).
I've seen the windsor conversions and considered that as the Windsor has a narrower block, but an adaptor has appeared at a good price and now considering whether the Clevo will fit.

Has it been done before? (Even into a 4WD Hilux of similar age?).

    Cheers all.

    Hi mate,
Not sure what is legal in NSW but biggest you can go in QLD is holden 308 in 4WD, I think.
Check with your NSW main roads department for engine mods they should have a list of what you can and can't do, that's if you want it street legal.
If you can put the 351 in make sure you can get mods for things like sump, radiator and suspension. Sometimes you can get the engine to fit but keeping it cool and not rubbing on things is a another part of the V8 upgrade,as soon as you go to move it a whole new set of problems arise.
    Cheers wheelie.
If it ain't broke don't fix it.

    Thanks Wheelie.

I've done most of the research already. With NSW Rules, assuming a weight of around 1200kg, I can go up to a 5.8lt (or 353ci) (although a Hilux might be more like 1400kg?).
I am however planning on using a 302ci to begin with. Assuming it fits.

Radiator will definitely be upgraded. The factory one has enough trouble with a 2.2lt! Sump I will have to look at as I go, but I am mainly concerned with Deck height and block width. In a 4WD this wouldn't be as big an issue, but my Hilux is 2WD.
Its going to be a headache and a half even if it does fit, but it will be much more satisfying then putting the the Buick V6 I have out back in it.

Check your calculations as those rules are supposed to be the same in all of the States. The weight is that taken from a vehicle presented for compliance check before the model is released to the market. For example, my SWB Hiace weighs 1400kg in the brochure but on the road it weighs 1800kg. Don,t guess that your weight is 1200kg. Call RTA to ask what weight it shows on its documents..

People frequently put 1UZ's in these things, so I wouldn't be worried about width.

if they dont allow a 351 just rebuild it with rods pistons and crank from a 351 as its the same block

Width and Height worry me. Clevo being taller then a windsor aswell. I found 1 other Hilux on the net with a Clevo but it was in a 4WD, so whether he could mount it lower or not I'm not sure.

petergoudie I am planning on a 302 conversion (4.9lt) to begin with. The only info I have of the RTA is that its Max Gross weight can be 2600ish with a Load limit of 1050ish. Which would leave around 1500kg for the car. I think 1200kg is fairly light number to be using.
But rest assured, the RTA and an Engineer will be consulter before so much as a spanner is lifted.

Looks like its not going to bother now. The Bellhousing I was looking at turned out to be the wrong kind. Looks like I'll have to stick with the Buick 3800 for now
