Have you checked the wiring to your starter motor..etc? seems like a starter issue/heat soak.
Also there shouldn't be any thermal switch.
Hi all,
My son has a 1989 mark 2 SX80 GL saloon (1800cc ) The problem started a few weeks back...you can be driving around with nothing wrong then you turn engine off ...park up for a bit then go to start it again & it won't start !? ...it won't even turn the starter motor, all it does is click the relay on the passengers side under the dash( by your feet).
Everything else works like the reversing sound, sounds, lights etc.
My question is... is there a thermo switch or something like this that packs up now & again?
if so where is it so I can replace it.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers
Baz

Is it an auto? if so, Check the nuetral start switch as they get dicky at times. (next time it happens try cranking while jiggling the shifter)

when it does it, check you have 12v at solenoid switching wire, if you do, the starters stuffed.
good luck. my supra used to do the same thing.

brushes in your starter motor sound worn out mate.... get a second hand starter motor or recon the one you have....
=)
Had the exact same problem on my Mark II.
Turned out that the starter was in need of a recondition and the battery had died (though I suspect that it was the latter that was the root of the problem). At the same time, this mod was done.
why didnt you just replace the wire from the key barrell to the solenoid directly instead of wasting time with a relay?
First thing first... try a battery that you know is in good condition. You'd feel a bit dumb if you fixed a bunch of things that weren't broken when the problem was just an old battery.

It is probably also worth spending the $15 on a set of new contacts first (forgive me if you've already done this). My JZA80 had this exact same problem, and I just cleaned up the contacts and got a few more months. Bought some new contacts, and it was only then I realised how worn they were. Haven't had a problem since.
