    Default JZA80, JZA70 and MR2 accessory hybrid ?

    Hello,

I have just signed up, I am hoping to find a 'Guru' or two who can give input to my latest project.

    I am working on a 1995 Mk4 N/A auto Supra JZA80.

I have been reducing engine parasitic loss, and so far have fitted an electric waterpump and twin electric fans.

    Now plan to:

Fit an MR2 electric power steering pump, ECU and sensors.
Fit a 160 amp Mk3 alternator and mounting brackets.
Fit a lighter harmonically balanced crank pulley.

I can then run a belt around just 3 pulleys, crank, alternator and aircon.

    Simple's

The engine will perform better without a PSP and I will perform better with AC

I haven't found evidence of either of these conversions successfully installed, so have made a 'leap in the dark' begining, and ordered parts that I can only recon that I might need?

Alternator mounting bracket and adjuster strap from a JZA70 Mk3 Supra N/A.
MR2 electric power steering pump, hoses, ECU , front loom, all sensors and pickups.

I am hoping that it is possible to run the belt around the top hose, because the JZA80 TT plumbing is not compatible.

    Any input welcomed please..............................

    Cheers

    David

    Work so far:

i like your attention to detail mate, insulation looks interesting, thermos and shroud look great and I like all the polished alloy

hope im allowed to ask questions in your thread, but what electric w/p and thermos did you opt for?

and can you get some pictures up of all the mr2 elec p/s gear?

    JZ,

Hello, I am pleased to answer questions, if I can help some and be helped some, then that's why I am on here.

I used a Meziere water pump, the job was a ********** because 4 of the holes were in the wrong place, had checked next to gasket before started, but the 3 of the 4 offending holes were behind the Toyota ticket on the plastic bag the gasket was in, and I didn't spot it.

I didn't find out until the engine was stripped, aaaargh, America is a long way away.

    So re-engineered it to fit.

It said Supra on the box

Thermostat is that shiny piece in the top hose, an ebay job, simple, works well and looks trendy too.
Shroud and fans are Mishimoto, half the price and work as well as others.

    Thank you for the compliments

ah ok ive seen these pumps before, do they come with temp sensors or are they not variable speed? ...a thermostat would suggest they are not variable speed...

are you using the free spinning pulley on it?

did you consider a inline davies craig pump and controller?

    J,

The Meziere electric water pump is a fixed speed no stat item.
Yes, currently using it's free spinning pulley.
Never heard of the Craig Davis system before.

This part of the job is jobbed, and works well, now want to move on.

Here is a snap of the Mk3 alternator set up I plan to convert to.

Here is a snap of the (just arrived) Mk3 brackets I have, but unsure yet whether match to the Mk4 head without some 're-engineering'?

The MR2 items have not yet arrived, maybe they are stuck in a snow drift somewhere.

The ATI pulley and shorter belt is stranded in an airport somewhere, along with the 160amp alternator?

I have to do this work outside, and the present weather conditions are not helping the project, but allow me the opportunity to press some buttons and research the job.

I am trying to learn of the simplest route for this project before I attempt the next phase.

Meanwhile, for obvious reasons, my next job will be to fit the Torsen LSD I have rebuilt.

If you click on the link in my signature, you will find photographs and information of the project so far.

    Mmmm?

I have offered up the Mk3 alternator bracket, and it looks as though only one hole might match a stud.

It has become obvious that this won't be a simple swop.

A photograph of this part of a Mk3 head, and one of this bracket in place on a Mk3 would be enlightening, does anybody have these they could post please?

I will borrow a JZ80 GE head from a friend, and try to find a way to make it work.

Unless there is an alternator bracket off another model that would be a straight fit, or maybe a better fit than this one ?

I don't believe I am the first to do this, the information I need must be 'out there' somewhere?

Any constructive input welcomed, please ...............

Does this help? Forgot to take one of the bare head, its just 3 bolts holes to suit the bracket. You might have to make your own bracket to suit 2jz

Also keen on mr2 ps pump setup info. Is you alternator aftermarket? I didn't think they came out with 160amps?

    S,

Thank you for the photo's, they are helpful.

Does anyone have a shot that shows the bare head, for me to compare with Mk4 ?

    J,

Here is a snap of an MR2 pump taken from the net, mine has not been delivered yet, maybe still waiting for that snow drift to clear.

Mounting and plumbing the PSP into the space vacated by the Mk4 alternator will be the easy part, marrying the sensors and ECU into the Supra mechanics and loom will be the challenge.

The alternator I am planning to use is a rebuilt OEM unit, rewound to give 160amps. (not here yet)

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...TQ:MOTORS:1123

My present unit is 100amps, but will have added, 2 fans, 1 waterpump and a 70/80amp PSP.

With 3 of us interested to re-marry MR2 power steering pumps, that part of the project sounds like a team effort.

    Cheers

    David

well i tried to be a good citizen and take a photo thinking i had a bare head somewhere. turns out all 3 of my 7m heads have the bracket still on for easy lifting

can still sort of see tho -the 3 bolts at the bottom are where it bolts onto the head.

note: engine is a 7m-ge out of an mx83 cressida but should be the same as the mark III 7m-gte

    hope this helps.

mmm interesting (pic of mr2 pump). so the mr2 pump uses a electronic control unit and sensor? they are missing from the photo yeah?

I wonder if the electronic pump is more efficient compared to the mechanical pump, it would be good to NOT have to run a power steering cooler...

I like the idea behind the electronic pump purely because the last track day I went to I boiled my powersteering fluid and it spewed everywhere... I know a cooler would fix this but thats just more plumbing and crap in my engine bay...

    Andrew,

Thank's for the photo, that helps, anyone have a snap of the head showing the studs?

I will either need to fit this around the Mk4 top hose plumbing, or if not poss, have to find a way to change the top hose plumbing to a TT system.

    J,

Mechanical or electrical, if you are boiling your oil, you will need a cooler with either system.
I believe the Supra Mk3 has a simple cooler system you could maybe use?

ill take another photo in the next day or so when the heads are all stripped to go off for hardness and crack testing (gonna pick the best one)

google images for 7m-ge head may be quicker than waiting for me tho
