Default PWR Barrell Intercoolers - Welding to them?

I have a second hand PWR barrell W2A intercooler and the guy I bought it off welded some pipes to it.

Very neat job, but I don't need the pipes, and they look like they are infact alloy pipes, not mild or stainless steel (big thick walls on the buggers).

I need to get the lot chopped off and then some little straight bits welded on.

Do I need to use some fancy alloy type pipe or can I just use mild steel?

And does it have to be some fancy welding job or can anyone weld to these coolers? (thinking some fancy alloy type welding..)

Good luck trying to weld alloy to steel or vice-versa.
    Alloy is what you need.

Ok cool, so for my next question - where does one get alloy bends from?

And is it the type of welding anyone with a TIG can do?

    Try http://www.jntperformance.com.au

If you can use a TIG then you won't have any trouble stitching the bits together.

    No.

Only people with an AC TIG can weld Alloy, but having the skill to do so is a whole other kettle of fish. DC TIG owners can not.

I bought all my bends from Otomoto, they're awesome, cheap, and have very fast postage.

Are the ones from Otomoto alloy though? or just mild/stainless steel?

The alloy ones are like 3~4mm thick..

Otomoto ones are alloy, just as they state.

Also, 3-4mm is overkill for cooler piping. Most are about 2mm and that is plenty.

Thanks Nath, but I actually don't need bends per say, I'm after just 2.5inch straight stuff. I need a grand total (wait for it) of 240mm... Question is where to get it easily.

Almost any metal supplier will have what you need then.

OneSteel will defintely be able to do it for you (and don't assume that OneSteel only do steel because they do sell what you're after).

Edit: To save even more searching - http://www.onesteel.com/products.asp...Name=Aluminium

I think the penny has just dropped.

Does, in this sense, Alloy = Aluminium?

an alloy is a mix of two or more metals.

since 99% of metals used for things now are alloyed with other metals then they are all technically alloys, even steel.

somewhere along the line the term alloy has become synonymous with aluminium.

That makes no sense to me because Alloy wheels are Aluminium also. (In 99% of cases)
