Default SR20DET into TA22 info please

I'm going to be picking up a 73 celica in a month or so. Plans for this car involve 200-250 hp. It needs to be relaible, and I'd much rather have a factory turbo engine, than turbo a N/A engine for tuning, reliability issues.
Long story short, I can't seem to find a Toyota engine that will meet my needs, at a reasonable price. The SR20 is cheap, and meets my needs.
I installed a SR20DET into a 240sx I owned, so I know the engine fairly well. I don't need to hear about it being a sin etc. I love cars. I love Nissans. I love Toyotas. I want the TA22 body, but like the SR20 engine.

What needs to be done? I've heard lots of maybe, and might, and coulds, but who has done one? How does it fit? What rad do you use? What mods need to be done to use the SR transmission? Is there any problems that arise, that are very difficult to fix? Does the engine clear the steering, suspension, swaybar etc? What are the biggest obsticals? Will parts from other cars help in the swap?

Any info would be great. Or if someone can show me a tread on someone that's done it. I searched and found pics of it done, but not how to do it.
By the way, this car is left hand drive if this makes a difference.

Look up BigMat's members rides thread.
Hes done it into a RA28.
While its not identical to a TA22 conversion (RA28 has a longer engine bay), its close.

well for a start use a CA18 gearbox, same gearset but with a significantly smaller bell-housing, which should improve the odds of fitment.

If the bell housing is smaller on a CA, how will it bolt to a SR?

There's not a lot of info out there, but this thread may help a little.

One thing is that because the gearbox is so long the shifter is right where front of the handbrake sits... George (link above) didn't move his handbrake, but I would advise on doing this as it just didn't seem to be in a comfortable position.

heaps smaller, the blocks have the same engine mountings and also the same gearbox mountings. I hear the RB gearboxes have the gearshifter in a more ideal position.

why not keep it in the celica family?? 3sgtes are going on sale a fair bit and u will easily be able to get one pushing those numbers reliably with stock turbo!! plus youll be able to find parts on here!!

The cheapest 200-250hp RWD setup is the SR20DET. Got nothing against toyota engines, but all their RWD engines are either old, or big. And newer, better toyota engines are FWD setups. (or mr2, which is the same setup as FWD).

    Hi there,
Easiest solution for you would be to simply pay the dude/company who did your last 240/sr20 conversion!

I've done several engine swaps. I've done the sr into a 240 swap myself, as well as putting a KA24DE into a D21, which required a custom oil pickup and oil pan to be fabbed, and a very complex wiring harness to be made. Why do you assume I got someone else to do it for me? If I was going to get someone else to do the work for me, I'd just buy a car that is already built. It's cheaper and faster.

tunnel will need some love either with a sledge hammer or like i did cut 30mm recess and re fab. watch your heater box if you do this mod as you can damage it

    new gearbox x member

    ae86 front swaybar will work

i had all ali work custom made.

are you using red or black top sr20?

Thanks for the info bigmat. You answered many questions.
What is the best cross member to use? There is a carina one on ebay right now. Will a KE70 one work aswell? Will the R A P setup from a KE70 work with the carina cross member?
You had all ali work custom made? Sorry, what is ali?
I'll probably go with the s14 SR due to ball bearing turbo and higher mounted intake.

No, BC is not cold yet! The mountains are making as much snow as they can, but it's been a bad year for lack of snow on the mountains. I think they got a good dumb on in the last few days though.

    Thanks
    Jay

yeah you want the ke70 crossmember and rack. it will need to be modded but you can find that on here. go black top with t28bb easy 180rwkw with intercooler and exhaust.

ali work meaning all the pipe work made out of aliminium bends associated with the setup.

    cheers mat
