I did a compression test this afternoon and the results could give reason for the pinging

    Across all 4 cylinders I had 205PSI

This would give reason to believe that carbon would be causing this increase in compression,

I will grab some subaru engine cleaner or seafoam to hopefully remove some of this carbon.

Any other suggestions to why i'd have such a high compression test figure? Its a decent compression tester thats been used on other cars which got lower figures.

In the 10 cars i've owned (i put these plugs in by the way) i've never seen a spark plug look like this

I don't remember the insulation being red

EDIT: Further reading led me to think its due to an additive to the fuel (the only one used recently was liqimoly Fuel Injection Cleaner

Woah, what fuel have you been using?
A single bottle of fuel injector cleaner wouldnt do that.

That was one use of E10 Ethanol and a injector cleaner.

    Pretty yucky stuff

your running E10? :S i dont even run it in my mower! lol

grandfarthers pathfinder (1991 model) fuel pump died and also had a really bad ping in the motor when using it, after that ran some preium and then back to normal fuel and that went away..

and come to think if it so did my 2s-c Sv11 when on E10 and when on normal fuel it was less audible so that may have a slight thing to do with it bud..

Yea it was actually a once off thing, I'm suprised though because it seemed to run ok at first and i've run the stuff in a few other cars before.

It was quite hot today and the car was noticably pinging.. I really wanna get to the bottom of it

My compression test gave some really high figures which i'd presume was due to carbon build up

Does anyone know of any suppliers of seafoam? I've heard great things about it as an upper cylinder cleaner

Go into your local Subaru dealership parts/service center and get a couple of cans of "Upper engine cleaner".
    Awesome stuff.

I heard excellent things about the subaru upper engine cleaner, this seafoam stuff though is added to the fuel tank, some in the engine oil and also some is sucked through a vacuum line.

    what were the high figures?

im pulling a 5sfe out this weekend, for comparison i'll check compression on the old and the replacement engines.

I think youll find that the main cleaning chemical used in both is the same.

Most of the time i've heard its just a bit of Diesel fuel, I wouldn't be suprised

On all of the cylinders I was up around the 204psi mark with a very decent compression tester

    Just a little update:

I ended up trying the subaru upper cylinder cleaner and it didn't fix the problem so I got the throttle body cleaner out and sprayed in each of the cylinders from the spark plug hole then started it up once it settled.

The pinging has completely gone now, maybe they are inherint of building carbon like the subaru motors? (or just someone didn't maintaint this lol)

    Thanks for all suggestions!

5S motors are well knwon for sludging up quite a bit When i had one in a 94 camry first service after i bought it we took off the rocker cover and it looked horrible in there sludge everywhere actually made me look twice two bottle's of flush through the oil and actually physically cleaning the cams and valvetrain the engine sounded so different i was worried but according to my bro...

"thats how tis meant to sound how it soudned before was cos it was so sludged up with crap"

even though you seem to have fixed this problem if u get a chance lift the rocker cover and check out if yours is that dirty in there the one i had was 135,000 odd kays when we did it and it was messy as hell.
Wish I had a F#%ken awesome toyota.. saving for the goodness now.... stay tuned....

Thats the next nightmare hahaha. I did look under the cap and there was a "reasonable" amount of sludge. I will try cover up the oil passage lines and try remove as much bulk as possible.

How did the sound change of the engine? Quieter or louder?
