    Default ae93 cv boot replacement

    Hey all,

I'm currently in the process of replacing a cv boot on an sx hatch. I have got the old boot off(by cutting) and have the driveshaft out.

now i cant seem to get the joint apart to slip the boot on easily. is there an easy way to get it apart? or does the new boot need to be streched over?

    thanks, Kieran

Depends on whether it's an inner or outer joint, and can also depend on the type of joint. Normally it requires a nicely sized hammer.

If you can take a picture I might be able to help

I think if you hammer the inner "star" (the bit that is on the shaft itself) with the shaft in a vice it should come off, normally there is a C clip holding them on which is just has to slip past.

Will probably take some pretty hard hits though, use an old extension or a punch or something to make sure you're only hitting the inner star

Be sure to check the condition of the CV assembly before reinstallation and be sure to grease it up too

When I do the boot on that end, I usually dissasemble the joint from the inner end and slide the boot on that way. The inner end's CV cup comes off a lot eaiser, then you match-mark the rose-joint to the shaft, remove the circlip and tap the rose-joint off the end of the shaft. I usually do both boots too.

As kickstart said, was it noisey at all on full lock, you would have & will hear a clicking noise when turning when they are stuffed, if it was don't waste your time on it ...

I personally would not go to a wrecker for a shaft, if you ring one of those drive shaft reconditioner mobs in the Yellow pages they normally are not to dear, you might have to give yourself a "trade name" for the day as they may not deal with the public normally ..

But sound like you know what you are talking about .. I normally go & ask for a complete shaft with a New outer & reconditioned inner CV to suit a ..........

Reco outers dont tend to last all that long before they start to click ..

I had to replace 3 cv boots on my st184, i ended up just getting reconditioned shafts. They came with a 2 year warranty. They replace the outer cv with a new unit and the ones i've had on another car have still been fine since I bought them about 4 years ago

Could be, depends on what type of grease it was.

Clean it up and use the right grease, see how you go.

Also at my work we use a special air powered spreader that opens the boot up enough so you can fit it over the complete joint.
