    Default Head gasket sealant

Hey everyone. I'm in the process of putting a bike engine back together and the manual recommends to use a liquid head gasket sealant. The gasket doesn't appear to have any glue layer on it like other gaskets I have used.

Now in the past on my old 18r-g I have used the copper spray stuff but at $30 a can it's hardly worth it for 2 20cmx20cm gaskets.

What else can I use instead of the copper spray stuff?

Hylomar is what I used on my Toyota gasket when I did the HG on my 1GGTE.

Great. Any particular one or is it all the same? Bottle with a brush or does it come in a spray can?

Threebond 1207B, its like $30-$40 a tube but its good stuff. You will be able to use as a sealant on all other gaskets aswell tho.

Hylomar comes in a spray can. It is sticky stuff but goes everywhere when you spray it. Don't spray it near your engine. It is good as a gasket adhesve.

Is this from a factory manual? If it is, didn't they specify it for just a few spots around the coolant & oil passages and none at all on the fire ring around each cylinder,or between the block & timing chain cover.

Nah it's in an aftermarket book similar to the Haynes manuals, not sure of the brands of them ( I have 2 different ones ). It just said you should use a liquid sealant on the gasket. I'll check out the book again to see if it tells me where to put it and I'll check out the Hylomar stuff.

Ive used the Hylomar spray before.
    Good stuff, easy to use.

It solved an on-going blowing head gasket issue a friend was having in a Lancia

This sounds spot on to me. As specified in the toyota 2tg rebuild manual. Bit of sealant around the timing cover and the oil galleries only. I don't think they say anything about coolant. Oil return galleries probably don't need any either, just the high pressure supply.

If it's the entire gasket, hylomar spray or brush is win.

the thing is with a sealant is that you may need to pay a little closer attention to your head bolt/stud re-tensioning as the sealer ouzes out a bit. The hylamar stuff is meant to be the best
