Ra23 engine wont turn off

Hi,

I have recently installed an 18rg into my celica and it starts and runs fine but when i turn the key off the engine doesn't stop. I have checked and i am getting power to the coil when the ignition is turned right off. The engine will stop though when i pull out the coil to distributor lead. I have checked the ignition barrel and it is all turning. I have wired the coil up exactly as it was when i got the car although it didn't have an engine when i got it.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

So.. once you pull the HT lead out and the engine stops... then put the lead back on, you don't have the ignition light on in the car?

Seems like the ignition has been wired active permanently.

One way to check... if you can push start the car with no key in the ignition switch, then you go a perm live ignition. Of course, with no key means the steering will be locked, so to do such a test you need to be in a safe area, and once the engine fires up, apply the brakes immediately.

sorry i just read wrong, it is still in build stage and has no brakes so i wont be able to test that quite yet.

i am pretty sure it has perm live ignition as the coil is getting hot just sitting thier. One thing i should also add is i have plug most things into the plugs they were supposed to be in, the only thing we were unsure off was the starter motor. what is a way of fixing perm live ignition, what could be causing it.

Is everything else switching off when you turn the IGN to off? ie: is it just the engine that keeps running, or does the stereo and all ancillaries stay on too?

if it's just the engine, it's something to do with the wiring etc to your spark/distributor/igniter.

If it's everything, something related to ignition barrel or relays sticking (probably)

I haven't got my 23/28 books with me... but check the schematic for the 22 in this link. Basically they should be the same in regards to the ignition.

thanks everybody for their help but i think we have fixed the problem.

an extra wire had been added to the starter for an extra accseory or something and we had plugged it in when getting the engine going becaese another wire had broken inside but the insulation was still good so basicall we remove the extra wire and fixed the other wire,

Good to see that you got it sorted. Would be a good idea to check your points though, constant power to them when the engine isn't running can kinda phark them.

Nothing like pulling up at your destination, popping the bonnet, getting out and pulling the lead off the distributor!!

yeah i just had the engine running in the car i wasn;t driving it, then after i ran it i unplugged the coil and disconneccted the battery so i doubt there would be any damage.

I havent read the thread in too much detail, but a common thing on these old cars was to install a starter relay. This took the reasonably high-current needed for the starter solonoid away from the ignition barrel which makes it last longer/fail less. Perhaps that extra starter wire you found was the remains of someones starter solonoid.

P.S. I'm sure I responded to this exact same topic a few weeks ago, but maybe I'm just getting old.
