Default AE112R manual -> auto conversion

    Hi folks,
My wife's car is a manual AE112R Corolla Conquest (7A-FE engine). Recently she's been diagnosed with some back problems which aren't going away. One of the many consequences of this is that she can no longer drive a manual. I'm thinking of flogging the car and buying a newer auto, but that's going to be an expensive exercise. I'm wondering how expensive and painful an exercise it would be to put in an auto transmission. I've got mates with the requisite experience, and a few well-set-up workshops, and I've done work up to and including a clutch on this car. I know it's not as easy as heading in to pick&payless, dropping the arse out of an auto and bolting it in to the bottom of mine, but how much harder? Is it, in the long run, going to be worth it?

Depending on the car it can be anything between a piece of piss and a complete nightmare.

Firstly, is the autobox electronic (ie, does it have an ecu).
If its not electronic, then it should be a piece of piss.

    If it electronic, read on

Some cars will have a wiring harness already there for an auto, so its basically plug an play.

For the cars that don't have the wiring harness already there, you'll need to remove the harness from the donor car.
Some have a separate harness you can easily remove, some have one thats fully integrated into the body loom (not the engine loom).

If the engine ecu is a combined engine and auto ecu, then there is a good chance that if you remove the whole engine loom (which will contain the tranny loom), and ecu, and it may be plug and play with your existing setup.

Overall, unless the car you have is immaculate (or much much better than whats currently on the market), it will be easier to sell up and buy an automatic.

I pretty sure it has an ecu for the auto box so you will need to change wiring loom, computer, different flywheel (flexplate) i even think the drive shafts are different but not a hundred percent sure on that one.

If the car is in good condition then it's probably worth doing it, otherwise buying another car is probably more expensive alternative but less headaches.
