    Default Taller G series diff.

Does anyone know of a taller (lower numerically) G series diff ratio than the 3.7 :1.
If so, from what model? It must be for the G series 8", preferrably in the 3.3:1 to 3.5:1 range.

Some later model hilux's came with 3.58 ratio's. Not exactly sure which one tho.
Give these guys a call they should be able to help ya out. They looked after me with my 3.7 G series but had a 3.58 aswell and should be able to tell you which model had them.

Thanks, that's a good start. Lower would be better though, I'll give them a call.

    yeppo,

Not sure you'll get much lower then 3.58 with toyota gears. If you have the center and carrier already just ebay "motive gears" they do a few lower ratio's for the G series and are $450 for the ring gear and pinion.

Make sure the carrier was originally atleast as low as 4.3:1 IIRC

The lower geared ratio carriers cannot be used with the taller gears. The pinion offset is different.

though most aftermarket gears *should* be available to suit 'all' the crownwheel offset combinations

you just need to know what youve got to startwith

I have not seen the motive gear catologue so maybe your right

I tried to fit a 3.7 gear set to a carrier that originally had 4.88 gears. No worky, unless you use a crown wheel spacer shim a few mm's thick = gay.

AFAIK the group A Turbo MA70 came with a 3.23. No doubt they are a bit scarce though.

Also have a talk to JustenGT8 as he has dealt with those sort of ratios. His old diff was as quoted below and has now changed it to a 3.42

The VG40 Century comes with a 3.2:1 G series, admittedly they're not exactly thick on the ground but it's another place to look.

    Looking for some clarification:

Yes/no/depends: The G series pinion and crown wheel is compatible between the IRS and solid rear axle versions.

Reason why I ask is I just had a 4 pinion LSD rebuilt for my soarer with the original 4.3 gearset, however at 60km/h its incredibly noisy. I was informed prior to the rebuild by the shop that due to some wear on the crown wheel this was a possibility but the couldn't be sure, so to rectify the problem I'm looking for a new gearset and the motive units are a good price from the states.

So what gear sets from motive are compatible?

    Thanks,

    Rob

most IRS ones need a 3mm spacer on the ring gear.. there are threads around somewhere..

you measure the offset of the ring gear by placing a calliper on the ring gear flange to the centre of the axis where the one of the four pinnion gears sits

hope that helps. if not dig up that thread its pretty thorough
