Not terribly concerned about plod, how likely is it anyone will want to look under the bonnet of a stock-looking white Hilux? After years of driving around in a Supra with a giant intercooler hanging out the front it's only happened once. I'm more interested in technical reasons, ie do the covers actually protect the belt and other mechanical components or is it just for looks?

Protects belt AND fingers, all manufacturers tend to run them enclosed for these reasons. In a modified car you're likely to be doing the belt more regularly (or at least checking it) so shouldn't be too much of an issue, still remote risk of foreign objects though. Personally I would run it enclosed.

just protects the belt but if u leave it off u can see if cam seals are leaking and also fuck around with cam timing as you please

i made mine in the same fashion as MWP's as it has pretty much the most belt contact you can get.

Im currently running teh same setup as MWP above - very short belt directly looping around the alt and crank with an adjustable bracket made up for tensioning

This works fine *but* i need to reinstall the power steering pump which causes a problem

Ideally a belt directly around all three would be the go but i dont think there will be enough wrap around the alt pulley? Id also have to adjust teh alternator so it is as far outward as possible for best wrap, but this would make the main electrical terminal hit the chassis rail...

I dont think putting the stock tensioner pulley back on will work as it will interfere with the PS > crank part of the belt... unless it can be pulled low enough with a really tight/short belt?

I dont want to have to fit that small top pulley as well because... well i kinda used it for the alternator.....

Just checked on my other car - even with the tensioner pulley at max deflection it will still interfere with the PS>crank part of the belt... unless i get a smaller pulley there goes that idea.

    hmmm

I ran my 1UZ for a while with a short belt around crank alternator ps pump and tensioner had no issues with slipping and the belt was only a 3pk

how did you manage that... unless you run it over the small top pulley it wont work?

(BTW cant run a smaller pulley on the tensioner, it wont fit

the belt ran from the crank to the alternator to the ps and back to the crank over the tensioner not ideal but it worked

Its ok i got a spare one today, the main problem is to run it i would need to put the hydraulic fan pump (or equivalent) back in, so im trying to see if theres any way i can do without it

I see what you mean now.... hmm wouldnt want to run like that for any length of time unless you could find a ribbed pulley for the tensioner similar to what Ed did. Just looking at the pic above i doubt it would be putting much tension into the belt anyway so probably not worth having there at all

I've heard of people running directly from the top pulley to the crank pulley.
Not sure what the outcome was though.

Cant see why that wouldnt work ok, but my problem is that pulley attaches to the fan bracket which isnt on my engine, and dont really want to fit it when i have no other need for it

    Here is the tensioner-less option
