Default RA23 tail shaft Uni joints? im stuck

    Hay guys and gals.

so trying to get my RA23 past roadworthy, turns out my front and rear uni joints need replacing cause there worn, but there the non-serviceable ones that don't come out.

So, do i need to find a new tail shaft, can i get it engineered or am i screwed? lol

Anyone encountered this problem before? I'ts got a W50 gearbox in it if that helps.

Thanks all, Budget is getting tighter by the second too, so a cheap option would be lovely.

    Cheers!

The uni's being non-serviceable shouldn't mean they are not replaceable also...

I had to replace the uni's on my TA23 for RWC a couple of months back and REPCO and a couple of other spare parts mobs had em on the shelf for 28.95 each. The ones I purchased are the 'serviceable' variety - meaning they have a grease nipple.

Should you have a tailshaft with inbuilt non-removable uni's then I wish to see pics!

Most toyota tailshafts have the uni caps "Stamped" in place as opposed to using circlips...

Chalk me up for learing something for the day!!!

Does this mean that such tailshafts cannot have the uni's replaced at all?

Well thats what im facing, there's no circlips and no grease nipples, so um..... i think i'll get an engineer and make it his problem

I'll post some pics up though, if i can,

    Cheers!

so umm, you just press them out. not all are held by circlips, some are interference fit.

hit the caps hard enough and they will slide out eventually. then just press the new ones in gently so the needle bearings don't all fly out.

serviceable means that they have a grease nipple and can be stripped and 'serviced'. non-serviceable doesnt mean they cant be removed, it just means that once their service life is up they are throw away items.

Ahh, ok. makes sense, thought they were pressed in to the point were you'd need to angle grind them out

    Thanks Jimmay!

If you cant find another second hand tailshaft at the wreckers, then find a Hardie Spicer agent and ask them to replace the uni joints. The can cut off the old uni joints and weld new ones in that can be replaced by removing the circlips. they will want to rebalance the tailshaft after they put the new joints in but it should be better than new.

Whats all this talk about an engineer?

    1) take driveshaft to driveshaft shop
    2) say fix
    3) pay
    4) pick up rebuilt tailshaft
    5) ...
    6) profit

Not a hard concept, but unfortunately it can be quite pricey (expect probably $300ish as all the uni's need to be machined out)

Just buy the three new uni joints and buy a new centre bearing. The thing that looks like a donut made of rubber and steel. Mark the tailshaft with paint or liquid paper pen. At flange and shaft middle and front of flange that connects to gearbox. Remove it. Knock out bearing on a bench vice. If you can't get them out use an angle grinder and cut them unis under the ball throught the shaft. Be carfeful not to loose any counter weights and replace all three and centre bearing. Make sure centre bearing spins freely. Turn by hand. Reinstall in car and test drive. Parts should cost no more than $140. Should make no clunks or vibriation. Test by change down and up gears and at different road speeds. If your tailshafts shows any signs of being bent have it replaced. Or if any weights are missing it will be out of balance and need rebalancing. A simple job. Takes 1-2 hours. Also buy the greaseable unis as you can top them up and they seem to wear better.

Cool, thanks guys. Finally just tracked down a second hand one that has circlips, so hassle avoided.
Only cost me a hundred and the uni's are fine in it. Second choice was probably to cut the old ones out and get someone to fit replaceable ones. But that'd be more expansive.

    Thanks for the advice!
