    yes it does.

the wiring on this car is pretty dodgy and i wouldn't be surprised if the red lights up when the orange should or the other way around. that has happened with other bits on the car like the front and rear windscreen washers. but thats what i get for buying someone elses project....

Sounds like its wired up correctly.

The fact that this occured right after you changed the oil could be completely unrelated.

The only way I can think of that the oil level light would turn on (when the oil level is normal while cold) is either a dodgy sensor/wiring or lots of oil is being held up in the head, or in an oil cooler. (and I mean LOTS of oil, it normally takes about 2L below normal level to get that light to turn on)

If you came into my depot and asked for an oil the edge 5w 30 would be my first recommendation, so think you have something else going on. My guess would be previous owner might have put an oil treatment in to cover a dodgy oil pump that is not producing sufficient pressure. I would be putting an oil guage in pronto and checking your oil pressure. The differnce between a 5w 30 and a 10 w 40 in your application is not huge.

fyi, to have high oil temp you will have high water temp aswell.

see if you can borrow a mechanical oil pressure gauge to test the oil pressure, just to rule it out.
i dont have a funny or cool signature.

doesn't have some sort of crazy non-stock oil cooler does it?

It will be pressure - either the
    - pump is shagged and can't keep up at low speeds, or the bypass valve is stuck partially open?
    - or the oil pressure switch is on its way out and is being overly sensitive
    - the engine is so worn that the clearances are allowing the oil to flow too easilly before doing its job.

checked the recommended viscosity, seems toyota recommends 5-30 but for colder climates than ours, so while its a little thin, it shouldn't be causing this.

Easiest thing to check/replace is the oil pressure sender - either swap that sucker out, or you could get hold of an oil pressure gauge.

Actually the easiest thing to do would be to swap the oil to the 10-30, but if it goes away that won't really tell you what the problem is.

two more things to think about.

Is the dipstick definately from a 1j? - same sump?

How much oil did you put in? (1j takes about 5l)

well now filled it up with the magnatec 10w40 and the problem has pretty much stopped only comes on very occasionally. I'm at the point now where I dont care and putting it down to a dodgy sensor. If the the engine fucks itself a long motor doesn't cost that much anyway..

conversion was done from a jza70 halfcut so unless someone has done a dodgy it should be all jza70 parts

    Makes you wonder if
    a) the previous oil was causing the problem, and the magnetec fixed it
    or
    b) the previous oil showed the problem for what it actually is, and the magnetec is covering it up...

    Hmm....
