im not sure on the ADR but it is not myth. The pod needs to be mostly covered, that was one thing my engineer did check for when engineering my car.
It doesnt have to be in a box, but it does need to be covered.
I've spent the last few hours looking over the ADRs and NCOP documents and I can not find any mention of a pod filter needing an air box installed (aside from the technical reasons of drawing in hot engine air) as long as the induction/exhaust noises comply with ADR 28 or 82. Does anyone know what ADR this is may be outlined in or is it a case of urban myth?

opinions on this matter are varied.
exposure to heat and engine bay contaminants in the case of a cotton or paper filter element could be a fire hazard and knocked back on safety/roadworthiness grounds, even if not specifically described in the ADR.
i believe the EPA also have regulations about chages to engine configuration which may affect emmissions compliance that would extend to fitting an alternative design of air filter, whether enclosed or not.
IMO, keep in mind the ADR's are design rules, and function as just that. I think they are rules to which a car must conform when designed to be accepted for retail sale in australia. there are other overlapping requirements for future modifications which vary by jurisdiction and may in some cases be similar or different to the ADR requirements, advisory in some cases, manditory in others, and so on

Thanks for the feedback so far. The reason I ask is, I need to design/build a custom air box to house the Pod filter, was wondering what requirements there were that I should be building to.

In ACT, i passed with my podfilter not covered or anything, engineered and passed dickson like that. It only needs to be secured so it cant move around in canberra im pretty sure.
Bagged Gs430 Daily
Ra23 Cruiser
to cover mine i just folded sum ally sheet about 150 by 300 square in half. and sat it over the pod, the other side is covered by my car strut tower, so it only has two openings, where the pipe goes in and the front where it grabs air from
i know of a bloke down here who years ago got defected for unboxed pod, he rocked upto vicroads with a cardboard "box" around it and passed.
my airbox is a polished stainless jobie, top and side sections only. how it fits into the bay means there is just enough room for the 3" pipe out the back to the TB and its open in front to draw air in from the front bar area. bonnet has been popped plenty of times and no questions asked. except wheres your turbo? haha
dont have any decent pics of it here at work but u get the drift:

what car is this?
why not use an OE style airbox?

Identical to whats required in Perth.
The whole pod covering thing being illegal is a myth.
The whole getting defected for it (and also not passing RWC/inspections because of it) is unfortunately the sad truth.
As long as it still complies with the noise requirements, then a pod filter is *supposed* to be legal.
While it may affect emissions, it will affect emissions less than shitty fuel, old oil, poor spark plugs, etc etc etc.

Unlike the photos above, there is crap all room for a standard air box so I'm going to have to make a custom one.

It will vary from car to car but on my boosted inline 4 in RWD configuration in a relatively uncluttered engine bay there was no difference at all to inlet temps measured at the throttle body (post intercooler) with a completely sealed pod in a box with 2 x 3" ducts feeding air from outside the engine bay compared to an exposed pod in the engine bay.
At idle with the car stationary there was an increase in temps without the box but as soon as the car was moving there was no difference.
Results will vary from car to car but you'll have to ask yourself if it's worth the effort given you're not required to have one here in ACT.

Did you measure that under long boosted periods?
Without boost its probably no issue for the IC to cool from 50degC back to ambient, but under high boost I could see it struggling to cool from 80+degC back to ambient.
My 1UZ had a pod breathing engine bay air. Intake temps were up around 70degC (measured in the plenum). Ambient was probably in the high 20's.
Cut a hole in the bonnet just above the filter and intake temps dropped to the mid 30's.

When doing my conversion i used the jzz30 airbox and the enginner said as long as its cover or "closed" its ok for ADR but if i were to be pulled over by an EPA officer or station id be fooked cause they dont allow any changes at all to engines. But he said there a very minimal chance of being pulled over by a EPA officer
