I've relocated the battery to the boot and am suffering some angst on the subject of fusing ... I'd like to whack a fuse in there, but it has to be able to cope with startup cranking current - and therin lies the rub.
Best info I've been able to find so far is that cranking current looks like 580 amps or so for 200 mSecs, then dropping back to around 280 Amps for a ferrari ... I imagine the starter on my 4K is probably not going to be quite as hungry .... Something like a 300 Amp slow blow sounds like a good idea - but I'm having trouble finding anything suitable.
What are others doing?
Ideas?
Hints?
Comments?
cheers,
Slapper

i use a 180amp fuse in mine, but after finding that it's changing colour to a nice blue in the middle of the fuse, i looked for a 250A curcuit breaker.

the guy selling them has alot of fuses and amp wiring kits. Compare his prices to shop prices.

That guy runs some hefty margins for an ebay store!!!
Draza is right - the 200-250A circuit breakers are the way to go, because they have a time delayed trip condition (have to crank at 10% above load limit for 30 seconds or so.... less time if higher above limit.... instant if dead short)
Teh fuse will died
...... butt scratcher?!
I use a pair of Jaycar 120A maxi blade fuses, which serve me quite well. Even through a 4ish meter length of 4AWG they dont blow while cranking.
I also have one feed dedicated to the starter and alternator feed with the other supplying engine electrics.

Any suggestions where to buy a 200A circuit breaker? Everywhere I look they seem to be maxing out at 75-100A.Originally Posted by The Witzl
Stinger do a 150 amp circuit breaker. However being, stinger, prepare to pay for the name. You can also get 300amp ANL fuses. I use one of these in my battery relocation. So far...so good.
I also realize that they are none too popular, but would a fusable link do the job?
we put one of those jaycar 100a breakers into a mates car when we relocated the battery to the rear almost two years ago now, and it has never tripped as a result of cranking the car and thats being driven daily.
I had a Jaycar 100AMP C/B... IT WAS TERRIBLE!!! Stupid thing decided to die on my up a hill...the C/B was stuffed/didnt latch anymore...never again..Couldnt work out after i had direct shorted the wires why it wouldnt start...bloody EFI fuse had gone too !!
I'd use those MAXI or ANL fuses..of a bit enough rating. 200-250 AMP or so..maybe more if you could get it...it doesn't have to do much apart from protect you against direct shorts...in which case..anything around 200-500AMP would be fine...
Kind Regards,
Kurt.

Joshtix: all about 12V on parramatta road is king. I'd be suprised if they didn't have, or couldn't get, what you're after.
I ran a 250A fuse on mine, and it's going fantastically, even when I need to crank the bitch for 10 secs to get it to start (after leaving it alone for a month - oops)
Fair enough. I need to go to all about 12V and check them out. I had a look at their online catalog and I couldn't find anything that looked big enough. I might go and have a chat with them tomorrow and see what I can get. I'd like to have this thing fused before driving it to dubbo.
aaaah ... quite handy.
It looks like I can get up to 300A in a wafer fuse, so I think I'll go with one of those.
thanks all,
Slapper
*shrugs* I'm 90% sure ed got his circuit breaker from there, and they had fuses bigger than 250A, but were out of stock![]()
I used to have a Jaycar 250A breaker which worked perfectly for many many years, and was finally replaced by the new owner for something which looked more bling.
