Default Jim Berry Race Clutches.....anyone used one?

    Hi all,

These are supposed to be the "beez kneez" of clutches.
Was thinking of organising one for the 4agte, but wanted to find out if anyone had used them...
if you could detail Price, performance and type of clutch...it would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Mark M

When I was a member of the NSW WRX club they were THE thing to have. The guys seriously sprinting their rexy's swore by his clutches.

Not a Toyota endorsement obviously, but he definitely knows his sh*t and was reasonably priced for it too.

Jim is the man, though he'll talk your ear off if you give him half the chance!

A few years ago I would have called him a little more expensive than other options, but he definitely knows his shit and the prices of other operators seem to ahve caught up a little... so something from his is a great option and you certainly won't be disappointed.

Make sure you tell him exactly what you want the car & clutch for and he'll put something together that is perfect for your needs.

I had a JB clutch built for an Aristo 6-spd conversion i was planning.

I told him my intention - 500 RWHP in a 1700ish kg car that was mostly street use but would see the occasional track visit.

I sent him the stock Supra Clutch & Pressure plate and he sent me back a new clutch / pressure plate / flywheel setup - for about $1700 from memory.

unfortunately i never got around to fitting the 6-spd and new clutch but i have a mate with a 500ish RWHP silvia (RB25) and he loves the JB clutch in it.

if i am to get a clutch made again i would speak to Jim once more ... if he hasn't sold off the business by then (he is looking to retire last i spoke to him)

im fairly sure my clutch in my 4agte was made by jim berry, might need linden (rd runner) to confirm, any who its quite good, has put up with a fair bit of abuse, track days, trips to the drags, the odd burnout. its a little heavy under foot, but i have not had it slip. the car makes 300hp atw and i had an excedy button before and that didn't hold very well at all. think it was about $700, it is a 5 puck button style plate, im not sure how much clamp force it has.

Had my sw20 clutch made by Jim. GT4 pressure plate based with the composite pucks. Has handled 400 whp so far. Had 2 big clutch issues that were not the fault of the clutch.

Unfortunately the arp mains hit the moroso sump I have so the sump was spaced off the bottom of the block slightly which made it leak oil in the bellhousing and splashed all over the clutch making it slip. Once that was fixed works perfectly again.

Clutch slave cylinder busted not long after that, possibly helped by the proximity of turbo heat to the hard lines. Fixed that and clutch perfect again.

I recall mine being about $700 as well which I was very happy with. Went well with my custom billet flywheel from Mark Barnes engineering on gold coast which I got for a great price too. I didnt see the need to step up to a much more expensive off the shelf twin plate ($2K+) and this suits me fine.
