Default Do I need a new water pump?

    Hi all,

I was after some advice from the masses, I have a 4AGE with a water pump that is about 6,000 km old, the catch is it has been sitting for about 20 months with only hand rotation about once a week. The engine has been drained of coolant over this time.

I have the majority of the front of the engine apart at the moment and I saw this residue on that seems to be coming out of the pump. I understand the "breather" hole it there to allow coolant to leak so a failed water pump can be spotted.

I'm guessing I need a new pump unless someone can suggest otherwise?

Also, how often does the rear of the pump housing need to be changed?

Exactly......easier to do now than later.
3TGTE might be old but it can still hammer along.

Fair enough, thanks guys. I do know I'd be taking a risk, I was was trying to gauge how much of a risk it would be. I suspect it had failed before it sat for this time which begs the question why the hell did it fail after such a short amount of kays?

when 4a pumps go they seem to let go the first seal inside before the first bearing, causing coolant or in your case rusty water to leach out of that hole. It's dead

It wasn't running Toyota red since rebuild, in hindsight I would have liked to but I won't worry about it now. I'll leave it for a future build.

As others have said before me, it isn't an area worth taking a chance on, unless you like doing rebuilds.
