What does the mist smell like? Fuel?
Can only be 3 things. Fuel, water or oil. That will probably tell you your problem.
hey guys
im in need of some help with a jdm 16v 4age motor in my ke70.
ok, here is what the car does...
-its hard to start, ie: keeps cranking, but after about 15min of stuffing around of attempted starts, it will randomly start instantly when i attempt again
- once its running, it runs really well until 4000'ish RPM where the revs increase slowly.
- exhaust, fuel setup and compression are healthy/fine.
- i havent got a timing light to the engine yet (as the previous owner removed the backing plates off the crank and cams, so its like a day job just to re-fit them) but ill do it in the following weekend
- exhaust has this 'fuely/wet' mist coming out along with the exhaust gasses. (doesnt chew water or anything alike, no headgasket issues etc)
- finally... if the dizzy is too far advanced, would this have any influence on the motor at high revs? or is the ECU controlling it type thing? someone told me that at above 4000rpm the ecu controls it, and not the dizzy (for what its worth, the dizzy i have is a jdm one, uses rotor/point style im pretty sure)
does anyone have any ideas
cheers

you cant really tell...so n odur?
its not coolant as ive been watching it like a hawk, and oil seems fine (wouldnt it be black smoke if it was oil?)
I stand ready to be corrected but...
Oil = Blue Smoke
Over Fueling but Burnt = Black Smoke
Over Fueling Unburnt = White Smoke (and strong fuel smell at the exhaust end)
Coolant = White Smoke
HTH
the slowly increasing RPM from 4000rpm onwards is the main issue
anyone got any ideas regarding that?
as soon as you actually get it started, does it belch out a big puff smoke at all?
its hard to tell given im sitting in the drivers seat at the time, but ill try and record it and ill get back to you
Maybe check your leads , what age and condition are they ?
timing error is my guess how far advanced is it..
lol i will correct youOriginally Posted by Laz
blue smoke = burning oil
white smoke = condensation in exhaust or burning coolant (BHG)
black smoke = running too rich
opinions are like a** holes.. everyone has one but thinks everybody elses stinks
a few of these sypmtoms i had when my dizzy was one tooth off the correct spot. check the dizzy is inserted properly at TDC. also check timing i know it's a pain but it could be the end of your misery, this sounds largely like a timing issue to me
how slow are the revs increasing after 4k rpm? i had this problem, i added a turbocharger and it fixed it good.
previous:-> 74 KE20 4AGTE, 04 RZN149R, 01 AE112R, 01 KR42R, 84 E30 318i, 67 MINI DELUXE
current:-> 06 BF XR6T, MY13 ISUZU D-MAX 4X4
ive put new leads, plugs, dizzy cap, and fuel filter
revs increasing speed is similiar to if your using 1/6 or 1/4 throttle... pretty slow
quick question: by moving the dizzy, then trying to set it back to what you initially had it... by having it a tiny bit off from what it should be, would it put the timing off considerably?
If you go here

you will find the Toyota 4age diagnostic manual which may help out.
nope. not enough to cause this problem.
