Question 4afe to 4agze swap and shift linkage

I was going to buy a short shift kit to go with my forthcoming engine swap when a guy at the store told me to confirm first whether or not my EUDM AE101 Corolla use the same shifter as the JDM AE101 Corolla.
So I compared part numbers at toyodiys.com.

    JDM 4A-GZE:
    http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/p_J_199...CMXR_3312.html
    EUDM 4A-FE:
    http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/p_E_199...MNKW_3312.html

Surprisingly the sifter cables are not the same and neither is the shift stick or any other parts for that matter. Are the changes merely cosmetic or functional as well?
I've read that the 4A-GZE would be a drop-in replacement for the 4A-FE (not counting the wiring of course)...

So can I buy this short shift kit designed for the JDM AE101 Corolla and use it with my EUDM AE101 Corolla shift linkage?

Just make a short shifter out of your current assembley if it fits with the new gearbox. All you need to do is increase the length of the rod below the pivot point by welding a piece of shaft in. You can further reduce it by butting some of the top of the shifter off if you can be bothered rethreading it.

I'll see if I can take some pictures of a standard gearstick, if I still have one, next to a modified one so you can see what I mean

Please post a picture if you can

Btw, how do people go about doing these swaps anyway? Do they use their old shift linkage/assembly or do they all buy halfcuts to get the correct shift linkage for the engine?
