Is it a 'seat of pants' thing, or have you got dyno sheets? I'd be keen to see the graphs...

Hey Guys,
Just thought i'd share my experiences, experimenting with larger cams in a Bigport GE (7 Rib AE92) with standard computer.
I bought these cams a few months ago when I had every intention to work over this particular engine with larger cams, quad throttle bodies, head work, aftermarket comp etc... but later decided to go for the GZE option.
Whilst preparing the GZE, with the GE still installed, I thought I might put these cams as a bit of an experiment and as a quest for more power for the next drift meet.
After installing the cams initially, the car ran like a bucket of shite! But after a bit of tweaking of timing and adjustment of idle, it started, idled and revved through the range very well.
Apart from a loss of torque below 4000rpm, everything over that was a great improvement, with a very noticeable shunt in the back at about 6500rpm.
I realise that this isn't an ideal way to improve your power output, but the cams were there and it worked!
So anyone thinking of doing something similar, do it as a first step and save your pocket money and get yourself an aftermarket comp and get it running even better! (or buy a gze)
Cheers

what brand cams?
craig, you should put it on a dyno and see what your pixtures are like, if you can, i'd mess with the timing too.
good work!
Thats good, useful information , thanks.
Is this a bigport head on a 7rib block(small port or gze)????Originally Posted by craigy
Ive heard there is a very rare factory bigport with 7rib block but whats your setup exactly?
Im just a little lost but ill be fine!
When Toyota Started developing the 'Smallport" 4AGE, they were still selling AE82 bigport 4age engines..
to aid in the tranition, toyota made an 88kw 4age, which was a Smallport head with TVIS..
So it goes
Bigport with TVIS (86kw)
Smallport with TVIS (88kw)
SmallPort with no TVIS (100kw)
(note- all kw figures arte what has be claimed by toyota, and is the figure at the engine )
Hope i could be of help

^^^^ so you also see the nonsense in a bigport with a seven rib block unless its been put together aftermarket.
I'm just keen to know exactly what setup this guy is talkin bout
Im just a little lost but ill be fine!
believe he has misidentified his 4age type, due to the fact that AE92's never had bigports in them

i plan to put bigport cams into my smallport.. in theory this should be ok.. ( i hope )

No offence, but i don't believe this theory of yours about smallport TVIS. (I must admit i have no proof to the contrary)
it makes no sense to me why they would reduce the inlet port size (which does away with the need for TVIS) then put TVIS on it, it goes against all of the principles of automotive development, which is part reduction, cost reduction and (moderate) power increae with better drivability.
I'll be glad to be proven wrong on this issue, so get out your camera and measuring sticks.
And bigport cams will go into a smallport head fine, w would do this, but if im going to bugger around and redo the clearances then i would rather put in something with longer than factory duration and lift. if you have the cams and time, go for it!

so there must be factory TVIS to small port manifolds around then?Originally Posted by shinybluesteel

according to adam_rolla and beige_bandit, yes there would have to be.
There were definitely 7 rib bigports with TVIS. I bought from EKW as a complete motor years ago. Was in front drive configuration when I got it. Less harsh up in the revs than the earlier motor which I also have. For what it's worth I am running Wade 268 degree cams on a standard comp with similiar experiences to Craigy, again no dyno sheets.
Okay.
I installed the cams into Craigs engine and played with the timing afterwards to gain this big improvement.
The engine is a BIGPORT TVIS 4AGE and the Block is a 7 RIB jobby.
As far as this 7 RIB BLOCK containing the larger crank I am not sure.
The Cams are a Crow Cams item.
The inital timing when installed was 5 Deg BTDC. Ran fine, had no more power, prolly much less. Idle was a bit rude also - too low.
I then upped the timing to the 4AGE factory manual spec of 16 Deg BTDC with testing terminals unbridged.
This is where the tioming sits at the moment.
Will possibly put some more timing into it but for the time being, the idle is great (Phat) the revs are smooth and there is no pre-ignition.
Will keep you posted, seeing as craigs shed is my shed!
