22R (for torque) or 18R-G (for power) are your only "bolt-in" options. Degree of difficulty depends on whether you want EFI, but as engine conversions go both will be pretty simple.
I did a quick search, but nothing sprang to light...
Looking for options to replace the 18R in a '78 hilux, it's pretty tired.
Conditions are:
Cheap
Reliable
Simple conversion (same mounts, gearbox, etc)
Modest power/torque gain would be nice.
What's the most viable and available engine? My first thought was a 22R, are there going to be any hassles I haven't thought of?

No problems. For sake of simplicity it'd probably be a 22R with carb, will there be any dramas with exhaust, engine height, etc? Any idea which cars came with a carby 22R factory?

Hilux. Later model than yours, 80's? someone will be able to give you a model code surely.
The 18R-G. The GOOD 2 Litre Tractor motor.
Yeah, various Hilux (and maybe Hiace?) models in the 80's and 90's had the carbie 22R's. Celicas/Coronas etc got the EFI version. From what I've seen Hilux engine bays have ample room for just about any 4-cyl engine so I doubt you'll have any problems with clearance.
