I would start by pulling the plugs and trying to turn it over, if no joy turn it to the point where it is getting stuck and figure out which cylinder is closest to tdc this should narrow it down to an individual cylinder ( unless it is in the bottom end ) Slim chance but chuck a bore scope in and have a look. But at the end of the day if the engine is locking up at a certain point its almost inevidable you'll have to pull it down.

It was a 1uz.. ended up spraying some wd40 down the spark plug holes into the bores and turning back and forth a few times.. After a few goes it freed up and turns over nicely now.

    Maybe carbon build up..
    Thanks all

Not much of a reason at all for carbon compared to rust.
'I've scrapped better.' John stated when asked about the car by the guy with the silver tipped cowboy boots!

If it was carbon, then the existing carbon may have expanded due to moisture stopping the piston

There would need to be a lot of Rust to stop the piston I would think?

This can be checked with a compression test, rust would give a lower readig?
