Default Engine wont turn over by hand?

Hey all, i've got an engine that when trying to turn over by hand it gets stuck at a certain point and wont go any more.

I can turn the crank pulley almost 360 deg to a point where it stops, then I can go back 360 deg and gets stuck again at same point.

I am guessing i'll have to crack it open to see whats going on inside.

Any ideas though why it'd get stuck at this one point each time?

    Thanks

Long block or short block? Is the gear box connected?

If long block pull you rocker covers out and have a look before puling the hole thing apart/

in the past i have had a conrod bolt hit the windage tray and stop, but it wasnt 360 degree's but close, maybe 300-330 degrees.

yeh get the sump off and have a gander.

    what engine is it ?

Its a long block, no gearbox connected.. Doesn't sound like anything is hitting inside which is odd..

Turbo Ra28: If i were you i'll start by pulling the rocker cover off and having a "Gander". then I'll be removing the front timming cover and removing the belt, turning the CAM,s individually and so on....

I have seen this happen before when there was a buildup of carbon on top of the piston and when the piston almost hit tdc it would lock up like you say.

Also what motor is it hopefully not a 1hz in the landcruiser in your sig

removing the belt and turning the cams could result in the valves hitting the piston and under the tension of the valves springs it could possibly bend a valve..

what i would do is check all the timing marks line up, cos if they dont its likely a piston is hitting a valve, and/or take the spark plugs out, could be possible its got plugs in there that are too long for it......

Turning 360 degrees would put the engine through at least one compression cycle

If it's toyota and timing belt it's non interference, so no pistons hitting valves.

the vvti engines including the 1jz and 2jz are interference, he didnt list what engine it was, and i did say "could result"

    just to eliminate the obvious.

i had the experience it didnt turn over because i had the flywheel bolts in without the flywheel...and they were going straight through and fowling on the end of the crank.
we spent hours and hours tryna figure out why
    cheers.

This doesnt apply to diesels either get a toyota diesel timing belt out just 1 tooth and you will be ripping the head off
