Default Retrofit Variable Cam Timing Phaser

Sorry in advance if this is a silly question
I've been looking at the delphi variable cam timing phaser:

If you can use a adjustable cam gear on a 2T or 3T why not a VCT phaser?
If you can make room, which I think might be possible with the correct timing cover like the one from BRD.

The unit could retard the cam up to 6degrees on start up to give a smother idle and lower the torque ban.
Under mild accel, the cam would shift back to normal keeping the power coming on smoothly.
Finally under hard accel the cam could shift up to 6degrees advance, giving better upper torque and rpm.
Has anyone seen one of these units used where it wasn't installed in the first place?
From what i've read most programmable ecu's have features to control the phaser.
    Would it work?

Sure, it would work if you can make it fit.
That would be the biggest problem.
Getting an ECU to control it would be easy by comparison.

I cant see anything on the Delphi site which shows how they get the adjustment oil to the unit.
I imagine welding & machining of the head would be required.

Have you heard of anyone else using these?
    Any suppliers in Aus?

Although i really like the idea, i completely agree with MWP on this one.

    MAJOR effort for minimal gain.

For the money spent on trying to make it work, you could buy 2-3 VVTi 1UZ's methinks.

Why not just start with a good motor?

I do believe the standard toymods comeback to that is

    "Because I Can".

Although retro-tech on a period correct powerplant > life.

It would be kinda cool to say youve got a side-draught carb'ed VVTi 18R-G

    Found something much more interesting
Concentric Cam (Cam-in-Cam) with dual independent phaser
Concentric camshafts enable dual-independent Variable Valve Timing or VVT on a single camshaft.

New Viper V10 uses this tech.
The same people who build these concentric cams, also make a pushrod variable valve lift system.

    sexy stuff

http://www.mechadyne-int.com/vva-pro...tric-camshafts it all looks very interesting, but to a custom set up would be damn expensive

Expensive maybe? I've emailed them and asked for a quote. Expensive or not its certainly bang for buck...

Erm, "bang for buck" means you get a big power increase for little money... something this will definitely not achieve.

Youll spend as much and probably more on this as you would on a full turbo setup.

True...Its simple either turbo or a decent motor to start with other wise it's a never ending money pit.
