I assume that in the case of the change, all the articles and other content from the old site would be brought over?
is this going to happen? ie back to the old toymods.org.au?
reason i ask, theres a lot of linking of info going on in threads, both links to old forums, and links to other info within these forums. if the domain changes, the links are all going to be ass fcked, and reference material for discussion in threads will be lost.
if its going to happen, i suggest do it now, and minimise the dead link damage, or just dont do it...
cheers

All the old content and articles won't change... All that is happening is that to access these new forums instead of toymods.net you can use the old toymods.org.au. Ed's point is that lots of people are linking to toymods.net threads but once forum domains are migrated over these links will be rendered dead and hence p00.Originally Posted by Bananaman

It is deffinatly going to happen as soon as possible but requires some digit extraction from the 2 people who are required to make the changes. There is also some preliminary computer stuff that hasn't been done yet to avoid losing what we have on the old site. This is apparently more difficult than the rest of the board first expected![]()

Ahh. I thought the whole site would change, and all the content from the old site would be migrated to the format of the new site. My bad.Originally Posted by boris

I'd assume all references to links in the databases can be changed, it'd probably make the server chug for a while, but it's just a pretty front end to a database after all.

Frank if you're talking about the old web site, you'll be sadly mistaken. This new website is all nice and database driven. The old web site is an OLD WEBSITE. A lot of it is static.
We will be moving things over as we go though.
is it not possible to just swap domain names. (sorry im just a noob at this stuff)
No I'm talking about the new one. I know the old one was crappy, I was just trying to explain it to Ed.
Would it be best just to put the new ones at toymods.org.au/forums and leave the old one archived at forums.toymods.org.au?

yeah, still doesnt solve the whole x-linking within these forums problem... as well as the develloping list of external links to these forums...

My suggestion of modifying references in the database does solve the problem though. As for the external links, it's unfortunate and we don't have control over them.

no, i know...
hence my 'the sooner the better' suggestion

Yes. Tis a very good point ed has brought up.....
Beige.... The new Black!!!
indeed it is, and like rod and josh have said we're trying to do all that's required to make the move happen....
... its just one of those things like "when the 3 suns become one"..... too many people need to be co-ordinated at once to make it happen easily
i'd even be sitting at home this weekend saving and archiving and rewriting and organising all the articles and information from the old website..... if my farking phone line and ADSL wasnt farking dead....
... can someone lend me some internet at my house via ESP or something????![]()
...... butt scratcher?!
sorry if i'm flogging a dead horse here, this issue may have already been resolved..
personally i can't see why all the articles can't be in the one db and all links resolve okay. if, during the merge, a record was kept of each threads old id then a simple regex search through the db could hunt down and fix links.
it would probably take a couple hours as i'm guessing the db to be on the big-boned side, but it's entirely possible. if someone needs a hand on the coding side i'd be happy to help.
ben.
