Default 3RZ Hilux Turbo - Fuel Pump & Injectors

    Hey Guys,

New to the forum but been doing heaps of reading on your site... lots of knowlegable people... awesome stuff!

I have a 98 Toyota Hilux 4x4 3RZ. I have everything ready to go besides a Fuel Pump and Injectors. Just wanted to know what people have used on there Turbo Charged 3RZ's?

And i dont have an intercooler as i have a bullbar on and am finding it very difficult to find one to fit. Any suggestions? Is not having one an option?

Below is what i currently have:

    - Custom Turbo Exhaust Manifold
    - T3/T4 Turbo
    - Sard Fuel Regulator 1:1
    - Unichip Computer
    - 3" Exhaust System
    - All oil lines and fittings

    Your help is greatly appreciated...

    Cheers,

    Sash

    Hi mate

Don't bother running without an intercooler, you will either end up with a disappointing result, or a blown engine....!

It is rare that you can fit a normal air-to-air front mount intercooler without needing to trim the area behind the front bar. Your other option is to fit a water-to-air intercooler... they have a small heat exchanger (like a radiator, but smaller) mounted at the front and an intercooler core that you mount in your engine bay (or wherever you choose).

Here are two pictures of my water to air setup:

As you can see it is quite compact as far as the room it uses in the front of the car - just a very thin alloy heat exchanger mounted which you can barely see a small edge of, and a cooling fan on the front of it (black). You really have to look closely to see it... and from the front with the grille on you literally can't see anything.

You then simply run a pipe from your turbo outlet to your throttle body with something like this in between:

and run small water hoses from the heat exchanger at the front to the two small fittings you can see on the above. You will need to plumb a small water pump in one of the lines to circulate the water of course.

PWR sells complete kits but they are not cheap, you can always piece one together yourself from generic or ebay parts if you prefer but the PWR items aren't a bad solution.

you cqan run an a/w between the turbo and the inlet throttle on the 3rz, would make plumbing really easy.

ive got spare an st205 a/w intercooler and an st165 unit (smaller)

    http://www.toymods.net//forums/showthread.php?t=52517

the st165 unitl it smaller in all dimensions but should be up to the task on a mild turbo 3rz surplus to my needs. yours for $100

oh and they should be slim enough to fit between the cam cover and the bonnet ok. juts judging from the factory pipe that runs there. the 165 unit would have no worries at all. the 205 would be close but should be ok.

ditch the fuel reg.......more trouble then what its worth as the stock one will work fine
use the stock pump as a lift pump to you surge tank and use a bsoch 044 pump as the primary.
as for intercooler run a water to air setup.

    Hey Guys,

    Thanks for the replies.

Shifty - Made my decision to go water to air 100% now, thanx dude! Researched PWR and as you said they are big buxs! I will buy seperate parts and i think it should work fine.
In regards to the heat exchanger for a water to air intercooler system. Is it a standard radiator that i need to source? or is it a special type of exchanger? Any idea where i could source one from? Also, what pump do you recommend? Im planning on purchasing the ST165 off TooF should fit well, or would you recommend the ST205?

Has anyone used the Bosch 910 in a 3RZ Hilux? or anything else?

Still waiting on an answer on upgrading my injectors. Is there are direct replacement (440cc) that would replace the existing without any mods.

Toof - Sent you an email and PM'd.

Tweak - 044 is a massive pump, i think it might be an overkill for the type of setup im going.

    Thanks Gents,

    Sash

In my case I am running the PWR setup, which has a heat exchanger about half the size of the radiator.

A normal radiator would be fine, but obviously would be quite large and might provide you with some fitting headaches! Also as you can see from the example picture above, the water fittings on cores are generally quite small so the fittings on normal radiator would mean you'd need to run some type of a reducer in-line.

You can get heat exhangers off ebay, in fact I think you can get kits for $300... not sure how well they work but they can't be too bad

this might be a silly question... but, is it possible to use a transmission/oil cooler to act as a heat exchanger in a water to air intercooler setup? as the sizes that these come in, seem to be ideal for my situation? Eg. 28cm x 26cm x 2cm. Any thoughts?
