Default how do i wire a thermo fan thru a relay correctly?

hey guys, workin on getting my davies craig thermo fan working today.
it was on the car when i got it and it had the top hose temperature sensor which is ugly and just increases my chances of leaks. so that has been removed (it wasnt working when i took it out anyway) and instead of that i have bought myself a VDO water temp sender thingy magig. this has gone in the hole where the brown ecu sensor was in the water housing (no ecu, i have an lpg carb these days)
now, i wired it up how i thought it should go, but it appears i got it wrong, so im after your help...
the jpg is a replica of the drawing on the side of the relay
it has 5 pins, but i believe i only need to use 4 of those...i may be wrong tho.
the VDO switch i have only has a single pin and is rather similar to TFS110 in this link: http://www.toymods.net/forums/showthread.php?t=5125

if someone is able to tell me how to wire this thermo correctly that would be muchly appreciated with copious amounts of love
    cheers guys, andrew

This has been covered many times, both here and on the old forum.

That was the first link give by Google, and it is exactly what you want.

Something tells me, from this and other threads, that you expect to be spoon fed. Dont expect it.

that vdo sender unit will give an earth output when it reaches its preset temp.
on your relay you should have the numbers 30, 85, 86, 87

now this is what you do.

30 will go to the battery.
87 will go to your thermo.
85 will go to the sender
and 86 can be ignition supply

how this works is 30 and 87 are your contacts and when 85 and 86 (coil winding) are activated this will close the contacts and give full power to pin 87 which goes to your fan.
you should put about a 15 amp fuse on the battery supply to. just to be safe

hope this helps u out a bit.
