Witzy, didn't you do Simon's RA28? In which case, the alternator light was on the whole time. Never bothered to fix it, as I will be implementing my own body computer with voltage readout (among other read outs)
Sounds interesting? How do you go about doing that?
The Advantage of this Mod though, is a massive improvement from stock for heaps cheap.

just bought 85 amp to give this a go. $35 bucks and not too easy to find.

No I didn't do Simon's ra28.... Not that I remember.
On my ra28 I actually fitted an non standard charge light, using a small "liliput" type globe in a panel mount housing from Jaycar. I did this cos I was using the stock charge light spot for some other purpose.
This worked perfectly for me, with one side of the globe going to ign 12v+, and the other side went to charge light output on the alternator.
Maybe this is a solution?

Well i received my alternator today. It's visually looks in great condition, no oil anywhere on it.
It's the K1, as per sticker on the unit. It has the serpentine belt drive, but easy fix.

I think this is a solution from what I have read on the (deep breath) Ozzrodders website. Someone there has installed the 85amp alt and there is some good info about wiring up the S and L. Specifically the S needs to have a 5 amp fuse between it and the battery (or B+) terminal. The L needs a 2 watt bulb (the charge light I guess) connected in series to the IGN.
It also mentions that the L connector also has a field exciter which will pick up low revs and adjust the alt output to compensate.
I will be asking my broinlaw to look at the circuit diagrams and see what he thinks. I think it needs a relay to do some switching on start up so the charge light gets switched once the engine is running.
Has anyone measured any voltages going to the L connector when the engine is running? I measured 2 v coming from it to ground and the same volts at the electric choke.
I'll post here if he has a solution.
I have a question for the electrically inclined. I have the povo 17/70 amp alternator on my 18RG and last night I basically drove home on the battery with lights and wipers dimming and slowing as I progressed.
Today I put some charge back in the battery and connected my charge lightn (which I had been too lazy to do) and kicked over the engine. Measured the voltage at idle expecting low 13 or so volts. 15+ volts on the meter! This is promising I think assuming the alternator is complensating for the low battery. Rev up the engine voltage goes up to 16.9volts. Starting to be concerned about what the alternator is doing at this stage. Start switching on accessories (headlights, wipers etc). Measure the voltage again 13.3 volts under load.
To the question! Are these the symptoms of a failing regulator or has my alternator gone and crapped out?
Glen
Hi,
at a guess your reg is shagged. BE CAREFUL WITH THIS! Too much voltage tends to completely fek gauges! The reg went in my KE70 a few years back and blew every electrical gauge on the dash. LUCKILY the stereo i had had it's own regulator in it which changed the voltage again so it was ok.

yep - voltage regulator is definitely farked. Get thee a new one.

Did some searching. Found some aftermarket ones for $24 delivered but ETA is Tuesday and Winterfest is Sunday. Looks like my sphincter may have to endure the $50 off the shelf price at ripco.

OUCH! i think i only paid $50 for my alternator complete! Surely you could probably go to your local wreckers and just pinch one off the back of an alternator....... Not that i'd condone such behaviour

Ended up going to pickies on saturday and grabbed two alternators so I now have a spare as well. Managed to fix the charging issue but am having charge light issue now. Getting about 1/3 to 1/2 lit charge light with alternator putting out 14.4 volts. I'm thinking my ignition circuit may have too much voltage drop and causing current to flow back through the other accessories. Will need to pull the dash out and check the polarity across the lamp to check though so will have to put up with the light until next week.
Glen.
I've been investigating my charge light issue and am concerned I have three bosch alternators with crappy diodes. My first 70Amp alternator I replaed as the regulator went screwy and started putting out 17 volts. The other two I have put out 15 volts (another 70amp alt) and the other 14.7Volts ( 85amp alt). I'm running with the 85 amp alt at the moment because it's outputing the closest to ideal voltage however all three alternators are only putting 5.5 to 6 volts on the lamp/light connection instead of 14.4 volts. This gives me my annoying charge light even though the alternator is charging. Anyone else having this problem?
At this stage since I have two 70 amp alternators in the garage I might pull one appart and try to locate and test the diodes. If anyone else has any suggestions let me know because I hate seeing that little red light.
Glen.
I have a question about the IG wire. My 2tgeu came with a factory internally regulate alternator on the back it has B+ L S and an IG wire. I noticed that the original guide the IG wire just terminates at the 6 pin plug. Does this need to be connected to anything or can I just terminate the IG wire?
