Default How good is the 1UZ Auto Gearbox???

    Hi Guys,

I'm wanting to know how good the 1uz auto is? Does it suck much power? Is it better to go manual? I'm just tryin to get the car done as quick as I can, so thinking of auto. Any help would be great, thanks.

Generally, autos have more parasitic loss. As for switching to manual, it depends on your preference but it will usually get better gas economy. Manual trannies are usually stronger too..

I use words like generally and usually because there are exceptions. i.e. today they have 7 and 8 speed autos, good for gas consumption

Gas? I'm pretty sure he'd be running it on petrol given he didn't explicitly state it's on LPG.

It'll sap some power but if you just want to do the conversion as cheaply and quickly as possible, then just stick with what you've got.

See what it's like. If you're not happy you can always go manual when you have more time/money.

Strad, GuyanaOO's location suggests he's from Ontario, Canada. How you going anyway? Finished that Celica yet?

Yes, I'm in Ontario, Canada. By gas I did mean petrol, it's what we refer to it as up here more commonly than petrol.

Giant has a good point as well. If money/time is a factor stick with it. Also, even lightly modded 1UZ's won't beat up on the auto easily, unless you're dragging and shifting your self or abuse it.

The A34x boxes are pretty decent autos, i would not hesitate to use one if time/money didnt allow for a manual conversion. Assuming it is for normal daily use my only suggestion would be to fit an additional trans cooler.

Thanks guys, this helps. I do have a W58 box there for it, and all I need is a flywheel, clutch and a bellhousing. I'm not chasing much power from it. Just unsure which way to go???

Ok, well if you're not going after power then either will do. It's just a matter of money and personal preference now. Meaning if you prefer auto, do it. If you prefer the w58 though, then you need the money for the clutch, fw, and other things.

If you have the money now and want to do it then do the w58, if you prefer auto or it doesn't matter you can go auto. but as mentioned, do put a cooler on it. Before you put it on open it and clean the strainer and re-seal.

Ah, Canadia.... Now I get it.

Ian/GT - Project is slowly coming along, putting the shifter in this weekend (which you probably saw), getting a tail shaft made up and getting the exhaust manifolds done shortly there after.

Should be at fire up stage soon. Much excitement.

I can attest to the toughness of thes autos. Last night I had parked on a very very steep hill, when I got back into the celsior to drive down this steep hill I put the auto in what I thought was N and started rolling. Half way rolling down this long steep hill the car came to a sudden voilent stop and the engine stalled. WTF was the first thing I thought until Iooked down and relized it was in R. Should of just put in D I know.

I put It into N started the car up again and continued driving normally. I think I was lucky as the auto shifts and feels good still.
